family: you never asked for anything growing up. you were never a bother. you were really calm. you never tired us out
child: i will take that as a sign that me never wanting or needing anything was a good thing for you so to be a good child i will proceed to brush off my issues and my wants.
family: you've grown up now. you're no longer a child. you know you can ask for something right? you can want anything and i will provide.
child: okay. i ask for this very small, easy thing.
family: oh we cant do that right now. we'll do that later. oh i forgot. ask for something else. stop asking for that thing. what about this other thing that has nothing to do with that but suits my preferences despite it being for you.
child: now i will not ask for anything again because i saw what happens when i do and i never end up having the thing i asked for.
