the notion of forming close bonds with people has been romanticised to our generation and the generation before ours. the beauty of interconnectedness touches all art, all poems, all stories. they sing the praises of love and goodwill to the moon and back.

but with emotional attachment comes painful vulnerability; a slip of a word can lead to a night of tears. oversharing leads to anxiety. harshness can shatter souls. the fragility of human nature is often overlooked, and so is the vicious joy that comes with breaking a person to the point where they are so damaged, they cannot bear to even look you in the eye again. giving people power over yourself is like handing them a loaded gun and praying that they never point it at you.

but they do point it at you eventually. the feeling of hate always trumps the feeling of love. pain outlives pleasure, and the scars it leaves are so often reopened with the slightest piece of nostalgic paraphernalia, such as a photograph, or a tear-stained letter, or a sweater with holes in it and the faint smell of cologne. nothing gold can stay.

no answer is an answer in itself. hesitation speaks its own words. painful time spent pondering and overthinking minuscule actions is a moment of hell that could have been avoided. 

and that’s the truth. the entire truth.
