And I know the moment’s near
And there’s nothing we can do
Look through a faithless eye
Are you afraid to die?

There's a fairly viral video of the Malaysian coup in which a woman is being recorded exercising, blithely unaware of the tanks rolling in as a coup is executed. Today I read the words "un-American activities" and see that the Smithsonian is being accused of this. This should not surprise me since the American president learned politics at the knee of Joseph McCarthy's chief counsel. Meanwhile, people are doing laundry, making breakfast, making the morning commute. The tanks are rolling in, but no one seems to be looking.
I finally finished Amphibia and here are my main takeaways:
That cartoon was beautiful in every single sense of the word. It’s a true work of art and my soul is enriched for having experienced it. I’m speechless.
I would literally have never been able to watch this as an actual child.
the amazing thing about tumblr is posts you made 5 years ago can still get attention and reblogs

@timeandrelativenonsense THANK YOU VERY MUCH honestly thanks for giving me a chance to write about the Madrugad. She's the closest thing the Mansus has to a psychopomp, and I love the idea that her sympathy is just as bad to recieve as her contempt. Her idea of 'I will help you help yourself' is a weight that most would buckle under- Forge and Winter is an awful combination.
i just think Conquest should have started with corrin reassuring her incredibly hungry and sick Castle People that xander was coming soon with supplies and he gets there with so very little and he tells her there was a terrible lightning-caused wildfire in the shitty dry region thats still one of the few place that food can grow and then he tells her that whats-his-name, silver haired boy who she should remember for this purpose has died in the fires (he hasnt but we find that out later). and Xander spars with her and the reason he has to give her so many Tutorial Hints is that shes weakened and ill from giving all her food and supplies to people in the castle and she has completely lost her focus. and he is her brother and he hurts from seeing her like this and she hurts from letting everyone down because she
has
to
be
STRONG.
but in this Conquest Being Strong is not just a thing she has to do to get out of her Castle and to Win Her Familys Love and Approval and to stay safe from her father but is a thing she has to do to stop everyone she knows and cares about from dying horrific deaths in the Nohrian darkness
and in this Conqest, hoshido is not just an abstract enemy because Nohr and Hoshido hate each other but is an Abstract Faraway place that doesnt even matter next to the way the rest of her family shows after a successful battle up with Hoshidan food for the fortress and Cloth for the fortress and paper and a precious single banged up instrument and CANDLES candles candles. lanterns and wax and firecrackers and for one day, at least, the Fortress will not be plunged into a resource-starved sunless noon
she will choose nohr. she will choose her people who are suffering. she will choose nohr, and when for those few weeks she sees just how abundant the sunshine in hoshido is... she wont even hesitate.
her sibling family, yes.
but her family is also the starving aid who smiles at her sometimes when she sneaks a candle out for noon card games in the fortess cellar. her family is also the castle guard who died of an wound they had no bandages to treat. her family is are the cooks, scribes, wainwrights - everyone who lives underground and tries to forget they could live a life without fear of the next day's dawn.
those are her family, too.
and for what hoshido has not done - hoshido will suffer.
