Going through pixiv for more Guzma content and I have now seen several people mention that in the jp (og) version, Guzma says something slightly different regarding family. Looking at a jp playthrough on yt, he seems to say:

” そこのおぼっちゃんは オレさまが 壊してやったよ家を飛びだし...... 強くなりたいってスカル団に 来たりしてよ それなりに気に入ってたがよ生みの親に 親不孝にも 逆らうなんて ほどがある次はおまえよ! おまえが煙たいのは ふりはらってもまとわりつくからだ”

Google has a few available translations, with one saying that going against your biological parents is too much, while the other states that “There is no limit to going against one’s birth parents and one’s unfilial piety”. Judging from what I heard about this line from people who actually speak Japanese, the second one seems to be more accurate. In the en version he says:” Leaving home like that and wanting to get stronger and stronger. You had some real guts. Going so far as coming over to Team Skull. And rejecting your own mother?! That was impressive “. Especially the mention of “birth parents” (in the jp version) seems important here. I heard a lot from jp users that the woman in his parent’s house isn’t his mother, but rather his grandmother, since the woman’s age is set to “grandmother”.

Actually, now going back to the notes posted here, the REAL meaning of what Guzma said is a mix of the two translations above “I liked it to a certain extent”, but then “going against your real parents is the height of filial piety”, showing the he doesn’t seem to like going against your real parents (according to the author of the manga anyway). The definition for “filial piety” is respect towards ones parents and I can’t really figure out how “the height of filial piety” is negative- though the translation definitely has him drawing a line at going against one’s real parents (Google’s first translation states the following: “I destroyed that rich kid over there. He ran away from home... He wanted to get stronger and joined Team Skull. I liked him to a certain extent, but going against your biological parents and being unfilial is just too much. You're next! The reason you're annoying is because you keep clinging to me even when I try to shake you off.”)

Also, again, the author has connected this in a negative way and they certainly understand the source material better than google translate. Said author then connected that to Guzma’s father not actually being his real father, since he does go against him. Not having a “real family” growing up could be a major factor of satisfaction for him, especially since Alola is all about family (with him already excluded from society, a.k.a. the big family).
