probably these guys
hey, hey hey. c'mere, c'mere, c'mere. can i say something? can i say something? sorry about your mother.
Uh. Hi. Got a little excited with this one. Bone apple teeth?
Somewhere nice.
That was the promise. That was what Margaret had said.
The hilltop they chose was right. Melina would breathe her last under the setting sun, in the arms of her love and far from anyone who would undo her death.
Margaret sat first, laying her dagger beside her. She knew how to handle it with the precision of a surgeon.
Melina stood some moments longer. There was a view to see, of a the distant city and the more distant sea. The wind carried the salty air even to that hilltop and Melina thought of lovely days spent at the harbor.
An ache welled up her chest and she ignored it. She would not have to think of such sad things soon. The gods awaited her.
They had dug her grave the day before, now they needed only lay down the blanket she would sleep in forever. She watched Margaret lay it down, removing every little crease and wrinkle before looking up to meet her eyes.
"Are you ready?" Margaret asked.
Melina only nodded. She was silent as she lay in the shallow hole, staring up at the sky.
Margaret looked down at her, an odd sort of smile on her face. Melina knew she was not excited to grieve a second time, but that her smile was of relief. Relief that her girlfriend would suffer no more, peace in knowing the gods would take better care of her than anyone else ever could.
Melina would be missed, but her suffering living in fear of Elijah was greater than anything Margaret would feel grieving her. That's what they had agreed.
Melina lifted her hand to her face, feeling the exposed bone one last time.
"You're beautiful, you know that?" Margaret said.
"I do. You've told me many times."
They snickered at that, recalling the needlessly complex and absurd ways Margaret had tried to called her beautiful. Melina never believed it, but the sentiment warmed her heart.
With smiles on both of their faces, Margaret raised the dagger above Melina's chest. She'd be smiling when she died, she had requested that.
"Wait."
"Hmm?"
"I wanna kiss you one last time."
It seemed to surprise Margaret, for she took a moment to respond.
"You do?"
"Yes."
She shrugged, lowering her head to press a kiss to Melina's lips. A third of them had been torn off by that monster, but Margaret did not mind. She meant it everytime she had called Melina beautiful and enjoyed every kiss, no matter how many times she insulted herself.
When they parted, Melina pulled her down for another kiss. She practically dragged Margaret into the grave, the knight straddling her waist as they kissed again and again and again. The last kiss had to count, right?
It was only after the tenth or fifteenth kiss that Melina noticed how Margaret shook. She pulled back to see tears trickling down her cheeks and she was quick to wipe them away.
"Don't cry, Maggie. Don't cry," she whispered, hugging her tight, but she had no words of comfort.
To kill your girlfriend was a miserable task, one Melina knew she herself was not strong enough to do. And why should Margaret be?
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry," Margaret cried, "I can't do it."
"Please stop crying, it's okay. I'm not mad, it's okay," Melina said.
Margaret wept into her arms. Melina did not die that day. They returned to the city, hand in miserable hand, silently agreeing there would be no second attempt.
