It was twelve at night when you got the call to come to the station. Something was wrong. The first thing that gave it away was when the phone call wasn’t from your mother, but from Wade – Sergeant Grey. “Hey, you need to come down to the station, no questions. Do you need a ride?” He says, his voice firm but there’s something else laying underneath, like some type of sadness. What the hell happened? “Okay. I’ll be there in ten minutes, I can drive.” You say before hanging up, grabbing your wallet and keys. You know your mom is late, she was supposed to be back at seven, but work can get busy and hectic for her, you understand that.
Why didn’t mom call me? What’s so bad that Wade couldn’t of told me over the phone and needed me to come to the station at twelve at night? Your mind reels as you drive to the station. At least the roads are mostly clear on the way to Mild Wilsher station since it’s night.
A soon as you park the car, you quickly take the key out of the ignition and get out of the car. As you walk, you press the button to lock the car before going through the glass door entrance. It was empty in the lobby. You pass the front desk, going straight into the main area of desks. You don’t see Wade in his office. But it is like a cloud fell over the station and everyone in it. All the officers have the same look in their eyes. “What happened? Where’s Wade-Sargeant Grey” you correct yourself.
This take the attention of the officers around you, all staring at you with wide eyes, as if they didn’t see you just walk in. Which by the looks they have, you guess they really didn’t see. “Who are you? How did you get in here?” A man with the nametag ‘Bradford’ speaks first, coming closer. “Uh, through the front door. No one was in the lobby. Where’s sergeant grey?”
“Why do you want to know?” Another person asks, a woman this time, her nametag saying ‘Lopez’. “He called me to come here? Now would someone tell me where he is, cause I’m starting to fucking freak out!” You exclaim, feeling all the eyes on you.
Bradford was about to speak, opening his mouth, before he got cut off, Grey coming down the stairs and walking quickly over to you guys. “Stand down, Bradford. Lexa, come with me. I need to tell you something.”
“Tell me what? Where’s Zoe?” You ask, confusion and panic stricken over your face. You use your mom’s first name, since you don’t feel like releasing that information to a room of people you don’t know.
“Zoe? Like the captain?” Jackson whispers to Lucy and John, who’s still shocked to what he had witness just mere hours before. “I mean, that would be the obvious person I guess, but who is she?” Lucy whispers back as they and everyone else watch this play out. “I feel like I’ve seen her somewhere before, I’m not sure though” John mutters, gaining confused glances from Jackson and Lucy.
Knowing he wasn’t going to get me to move or calm down, not here, not right now. He has to do it here. He hopes that this won’t cause problems, though if it does, he’ll deal with it. “There was a…there was a gang. Midas’s gang. They were a threat to us and the city. We had an operation going on. Chief Andersen went out on patrol. She ended up kidnapped with officer Nolan.”
Your stance stiffens, not liking where this is going. He continues, “They fought against Cole, one of the main leaders, and some other men. There were guns in use and all the members are dead now but….but Andersen, she got hit, in the neck. She died before the ambulance arrived.” He finally removes the knife, hating this is how you’re finding out.
Your whole body feels like its been torn and shredded from the inside out. Your hands start shaking, breathing picking up. “Sh-she’s dead?” You try to control your voice, so it doesn’t shake, but that doesn’t work so much. “I’m sorry.” Grey nods as confirmation again.
Everyone glances at one another. Grey gives them a signal to back away. Though just after, you rush up the stairs, going to your mom’s office. You go in and look around, hoping you’d find her and this is all just a big joke being played on you. But she’s not there. Only a computer and keyboard, some papers, picture frames – one of you and her when you were ten in a pillow fort, and a pen on her desk tabletop. You go to the couch on the opposite side of the room and let yourself drop onto it. Tears cloud your vision as your body hunches in on itself.
Your mom is dead.
She was alive and healthy this morning. She woke you up before leaving for work and told you she loves you and that she’ll bring some cookies home from the bakery across from the station. She lied. She never came home! She died because of a gang.
And there was another officer with her. Who’s still alive, but you can’t be mad at them. But you want your mom. There’s no way she’s dead, just gone like that snap of fingers. Sobs wrack your body as tears flow freely down your face in the dimly lit office.
Meanwhile, back downstairs. “..Sir, who was that?” Nolan is the first to speak up, though by the look the sergeant lays on him, makes him slightly regret it. But a multitude of other officers also nod in wonder, including Bradford – and that man is as stubborn as they can come.
Grey sighs, but looks around the station, everyone still at attention from the events that had taken place just now and earlier in the night. “She” he points up, referring to where you just went “is Y/n Andersen. Captain Andersen’s daughter.” He says sternly, voice hard and unwavering. The room stills. It’s so quiet that if a paperclip were to drop it would be heard.
John, Lucy, and Jackson all look at each other, the elder taking in a harsh breath before stepping forward, locking eyes with Grey. “Sir, could I talk to her?” He looks to the stairs behind the sergeant. All eyes are him, just like when they found him cradling their dead captain in his arms on the scene when they showed up. Just like when he walked after Captain Andersen’s body was rolled into the ambulance.
Grey looks at him sternly, making John think he’s about to wash him out of the FTO program entirely right then and there for that one question. But then his body slackens, just slightly. “Go. She’s probably in the office.”
“Thank you, sir” He starts for the stairs, a couple of steps up. “And Nolan, don’t do anything stupid. The girl is fiercer than she seems.” Grey says sternly, receiving a nod from the other man before he resumes up the stairs.
Before anyone else can say anything else, Grey goes to his office after saying “Anyone twenty hours into a twelve-hour shift, go home. We’ll resume tomorrow. Stay safe” to the officers surrounding.
John makes it to the cracked open door to the captain’s office. He takes a deep breath before bringing a fist up and knocking softly on the door frame.
“Go away Wade” You say, voice torn from sobs, not looking up. But a different voice fills the room, making you more alert and snap your head up. “..Not sergeant Grey…I’m John Nolan.” He says before stepping further into the room, but still keeps his distance, not wanting to intrude on you all at once, respecting your space. You look at him confused. Why would some random officer come to check on you?
“I’m…uh, I’m the officer that was with your mom…before she was killed.” He says, voice choking up. He’s never had to deliver news like this to a child before.
Oh.
You really look at him now. Up and down. He’s disheveled, bandaged and uniform ruffled around, clearly from whatever scuffle and fight happened. “Why did you come up here?” You push away any more tears that desperately want to well up in your eyes.
“I know this must be hard for you. I can’t even imagine what you’re going through right now. But you don’t need to shut yourself away.” He starts. You don’t look up at him, but he can tell you’re listening. So he continues, “I didn’t know your mom that well, but she was fierce and a protector for all of us. I know enough to now that she cared about this station and the people working in it and their safety above all else. And she clearly loved you. I’ve seen the photo on her desk. Of her and you. I never quite put it together, but it makes sense now. She loved you, Y/n, and she would have wanted the best for you. She left the Earth too early, but she won’t be forgotten, by everyone who she’s helped and made a change for, and especially not you.” He gets closer to you as he talks, until he’s sitting down next to you.
Silent tears are now rolling down your face. “My mom’s dead.” You say, voice quiet and broken, sounding so much like a child’s. John slowly and gently reaches out and places a hand on your shoulder. For the first time since he walked into the office, you turn your gaze to look at him.
Wow, your so young. You didn’t deserve this. He feels a guilt in his chest. Is all he can think as he pulls you into an embrace. He doesn’t know if this is the right thing to do with you, just remembering that this always made Henry feel better. But he lets that doubt go as you slowly melt into the hug, your head resting into his chest. He wraps his other arm around you, just being silent as he comforts you in silence.
