I work in a Catholic Hospital, not because I’m Catholic (I’m atheist and somehow haven’t burst into flames upon entry each day), but because it’s a good hospital. With the termination of the suppression order and the subsequent confirmation in auspol media that Cardinal George Pell aka convicted paedophile aka scum of the Earth, it’s interesting that there is almost zero mention in my workplace. My boss (equally as atheist as I), took me to a separate cafe a few days ago for lunch just to talk about it. It has felt a little weird at work.

Which is frustrating. We should freely be able to condemn child molestors, regardless of their profession and any affiliation. What he did was and is a crime. Children suffered. Families suffered. He abused his authority and power to abuse young boys who didn’t have a voice.

I abhor this awful human. And it’s no surprise to see his right wing friends rise up to defend him or talk about how sad they are to see him be in prison (Howard, Abbott, Bolt you’re all awful too). Who you call your friend is a reflection of your own character. And you arguing against a court conviction with idiocy like the fact that when one of the now late victims was asked by his mother if he’d been abused he had denied it at the time, or that the other victim didn’t speak out for many years.

What the actual fuck. These are such disgusting arguments to make. It’s not easy for a victim of abuse to come forward and it often takes time for people to process what has happened before they can speak. Also you meeting the guy a handful of times and a quick look at the evidence hardly trumps the month long processing of evidence through court proceedings.
