other factors:

mistranslations (from what i've heard komaeda is difficult to translate because so many things about the dude are ambiguous and translators bring their biases to the character and don't preserve the original ambiguity. i know the birdmanronpa translation made komaeda come off a lot harsher than intended. oren's translation is bad in this regard too; his editor isn't going off the original japanese, and he thinks komaeda is ""batshit crazy"")

fanon komahina (which came about as a result of mistranslations probably haha. a lot of people ship komahina as abusive?? when we're literally shown that it would be healthy outside of the mutual killing timeline, since the two of them form what's actually quite a nice cute friendship in dangan island mode????)
