Sleep better with Meridian Health and iMPak Health SleepTrak NFC health app on T-Mobile's network

If you haven't fully woken up yet because you had a bad night of sleep, this post may be for you as the non-profit organization Meridian Health and iMPak health have teamed app to launch the SleepTrak NFC health app and sleep monitoring service on T-Mobile's waves. NFC continues its march into healthcare, and this time we are seeing an NFC health app that actually monitors your sleep. The system currently works with the Nokia Astound NFC phone in combination with the SleepTrak card. The SleepTrak card is a credit card-sized wireless device that is worn on the upper arm. On the free downloadable SleepTrak NFC health app, users collect and transfer valuable data about sleep patterns and symptoms associated with inefficient sleep via NFC.

“With this deployment, we successfully combined the expertise of a health care organization, a telemedicine technology company, and a wireless operator to deliver cost-effective, easy-to-use tools that allow users to take control of their own health and act on the information provided,” said Sandra Elliott, Director of Consumer Technology and Service Development at Meridian Health.

Yesterday NFC took the final step towards becoming mainstream as Microsoft announced support for the nascent protocol in Windows 8, which will allow a myriad of Windows toting devices to be developed. However, from when Microsoft announces a new version of its operating system to launch can mean it is still months, and if not well over a year, from being launched. Developers are hungry to develop NFC software now and want to deploy on Windows boxes as soon as possible. Starting to develop an NFC application or service now, when it could potentially take 16 months for Windows 8 to launch, doesn't allow devs to pay the bills. So, why can't Windows devs and users have the best of both world? They can now.

The announcement came yesterday that Windows 8 would support NFC in tablets, PCs, laptops and other devices. Sometimes you just know something big has happened in NFC, and today is one of those days. No, we are not talking about the Google / Motorola news. That was yesterday, and whereas that is big for mobile and NFC down the road, it isn't big for consumers and businesses right now. While everyone else is talking up their NFC mobile payments and associated services, which are yet to launch, and complaining about the lack of NFC phones in the market, a long term industry expert pulls the rug out from under them all. Today, that company is Narian Technologies and they have just pulled the holy grail of retail NFC service platforms out of their hat. How revolutionary Narian's technology will be is for the market to decide, but from what we know already the company appears to have built a robust and fully comprehensive NFC system that can be put into any retailer's store today, within an hour.
