“[about richie being gay and in love with eddie] eventually we did it and i think it’s great. it’s a great, profound character trait and personality thing, and childhood trauma, because it is- like- you know, he’s a character who’s probably the strongest of them all. a character that has been basically hiding his sexual identity for all his life. and you see why. when people ask me ‘why is it so rough of a scene for adrian mellon?’ and I, like- we are basically setting up the world in which people like richie lives. so we are validating you know- why someone like richie is, you know- scared of opening up and living his life.”
