Ava was much too excited for that. Not just about the volunteering itself, but also a full day away from work, inside a fire station! The last time she’d been in one was middle school, some random city visit or something. Her father was still alive, she remembered he was one of the parents picked to chaperone and Ava was surprised he was able to take the morning off to accompany her class. She had no idea what she was supposed to do there, what kind of training exercises they’d have, she’d just done what the lady on the phone instructed her to do: worn comfortable, work-out clothes, sneakers and be there on time. So there she was, looking for a certain familiar face or at least someone that could greet her and tell her what to do. There were a few firefighters gathered out in some sort of patio, and she thought of approaching them when someone got in right in front of her, startling her.
“Hey, I know you!” Ava looked up and saw Andrew’s partner, the man that had come along to the yoga studio. “Yeah, hi. I’m Ava.” She smiled, nodding. “From the yoga studio, right?” He asked and she nodded again. “You’re one of the volunteers today?” The man asked, folding his arms over his chest and smiling at her. “Yeah.” Ava answered, frowning slightly. “Where can I find the others?” She asked and he seemed a bit disappointed that she didn’t want to be there making conversation. “Over there.” The man pointed. “We’ll get too you all soon.” He added and Ava smiled thankful, waving lightly and heading over to the small group of people. She looked around but couldn’t see Andrew yet, wondering if he was even at work that day.
