To give you an update about mom over the past couple of days, she underwent a procedure to remove a tube draining her cerebral spinal fluid from the right side of her head and moved it to the left. It's a relatively minor procedure compared to the previous surgery, but it did not make me any less nervous, especially since I was in Cherry Hill, New Jersey when I talked to the surgeon. As a result of the aneurysm, mom also suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. Aneurysm can occur in other places of the body, whereas strokes only occur in the brain. The hemorrhagic stroke is the result of a subarachnoid hemorrhage caused by the brain aneurysm. Due to this chain of events, mom now has a blood clot where the previous tube was located - clogging the tube. The new tube is positioned in the other [left] ventricle of the brain, draining the cerebral spinal fluid. The goal is to lower pressure in her brain and provide room for the brain to reabsorb the clot along with all the excess blood on her brain. Mom responds to physical stimuli, and she will occasionally open her eyes but doesn't show a sense of focusing. This is expected with the amount of blood on her brain. At this point, it is a matter of waiting and patience. For me personally, this is a much better place than a week ago. Although she is nowhere close to being in the clear, she is stable. At this point, she has surpassed many of the statistics, and we are very thankful for that. On a side note, if you try to reach me, and I don't answer, please leave me a voicemail message. I will respond as soon as possible.
