Some mugs from my latest firing! I’m pretty stoked with the results, its always an intense moment opening the kiln, things can be quite unpredictable. There was only one casualty this firing (thank god!) and now I have the arduous task of grinding the kiln shelf removing any fused bits of glaze, not fun. The last step in finishing these mugs is to polish their bases to ensure any sharp bits of grog do not scratch the surface. Glazing! Transparent glaze being poured into one of my mugs which then will be poured out after a few seconds, leaving a layer of glaze on the surface. I’ll then leave these to dry overnight as the porous ceramic becomes saturated with water. Recent bisque fire. I slightly overfired this load but its no biggie it just means that glazing will take a little bit longer as the pieces will be less absorbent. The kiln I have is manual, meaning that I have to adjust the temperature every hour or so. I usually fire it at night and check on it in the early hours in the morning, turning it off once the pyrometric cone has bent. Bisqued wall planter! I love the colour changes this clay goes through as it gets fired, a dark brown unfired, a rich orange terracotta colour after the bisque and finally a light brown buff after the glaze fire. Unfortunately the large planter didn’t make it through the bisque :( , I’m used to firing my bisque quite fast as my pieces are small, even walled and thin. Lesson learnt, next firing will be a lot slower to accomodate for the thicker walled pieces, with a candling at the start.
