Because I can totally picture the two of you buying a dog together - or rather, rescuing one from the pound. You two would totally go for walks with this huge shaggy dog that you both said you couldn't afford to take care of (but that you both fell in love with anyway). I can see the two of you on a rainy Sunday afternoon making endless cups of tea for one another and every time one of you gets up to put the kettle on, your big dumb dog looks at you like you've just betrayed him because you scooted him off your legs a little bit so that you could actually get up and walk around. And when you come back in to you little living room - where John's attempting to read the newspaper, and your dog is making it very difficult for him by chewing on one corner - you slot back in to the picture so easily it's like you never even left the room.
