22. how much of your own self/experiences do you believe pours into your projects? if this differs per project, which projects have the most and least of you?
probably the part of myself I put most into my stories is some element of my emotional experience, but translated? if that makes sense? like, I've never been divorced but there are part of nelle's grief surrounding hers that I felt connected to - carrying something around that makes you bitter and angry when you don't want to be angry, and coming to the conclusion that you need to be kind enough to let it go. and I've not pined for someone since childhood like javi & his girl in ICY but I know how it feels to be so connected to someone you sometimes feel what happens to them happen to you, and what they're feeling, and how crippling and magical and lovely that can be all at once, and how any amount of separation never diminishes that. and I've never been widowed, but the way knives' grief becomes this kind of personal manifesto or proof that somehow she is the one who makes everything around her poisoned and bad is something I could relate to - similar to joel in syat after sarah's mom leaves him. nothing the characters feel is exactly how I feel, and I certainly don't behave/react like they do, but I think it's important for me to connect to part of the emotional landscape a character's in to really get into writing them :,) lock the gate probably has the most of *me* in it for a variety of reasons, but cover me up (cel & merry's bond specifically) hit pretty close to home too. my sister is as big a part of me as cel's is to her!
