Ango Sakaguchi was a bright child, with too wide eyes he hid behind glasses, and bitten back secrets that weren’t his to tell. If he were any other child, then he’s certain his parents marriage would have been unhappy but not quite so... tumultuous. His parents weren’t bad, they kept a roof over his head, kept food in the cupboard, told him they loved him, but they didn’t love each other, and even at 7, Ango kept from touching things in the house because there were things he didn’t want to see.
By 10, his parents had gotten a divorce, and he spent 3 months in his mother’s custody until it became harder for her and he’d be sent to spend the weekend with his aunt every fortnight, and then every week, until he just never went home. He thinks it might be different if he had been a normal child, and not one that saw and felt the memories of every object he touched.
His aunt hadn’t wanted children, but she loved Ango— her house had always felt scrubbed and bleached under the affect of his powers, memories and feelings that seemed distant, and fuzzy. It was a comfort compared to the tension that had characterized his parents home, that had seeped into everything.
She kept large plastic sheets under the sink for on days he couldn’t bring himself to want to see anything, and she would lay it out on a chair, or his bed, or the floor and it kept everything muffled and clean.
When he was 17, the government approached him with a job offer, and he accepted it, and excelled even when the training was hard and left him exhausted at the end of the day. But he finished at the top of his class, and within six months, there’d been the offer from the Port Mafia.
It should have been an easy assignment. He was supposed to go in, and read their books, their information, gives them help and filters all the information back to where his real loyalties lay. It was supposed to be easy, because it wasn’t hard to betray an organization that you didn’t care for.
But then he grew attached to the Port Mafia’s youngest executive, and the man who refused to kill, and suddenly, he wasn’t just another member of the Port Mafia-- he had friends that dragged him out for drinks, and would invade his office to make sure he’d eaten and slept.
When Mori sent him to infiltrate Mimic he didn’t refuse, but that didn’t make it any easier when the world he knew came crumbling down in shatters. It didn’t make Oda’s death, or Dazai hating him easier.
It was justified, he tells himself, it was the job and he wouldn’t do it any differently. He isn’t certain he believes himself when he lets himself stop working, and think about it, but that doesn’t change what happened or what he had to live with.
