“You got it sis, I’ll even set the charges.”
“Alright, I’ll get on the wire and get Dee here, I’ll see if I can get Bogs too, I think I have an idea about where to find him.”
“Probably buried to the hilt in Dee.”
“My thoughts exactly, but you’ll need to take Meryl and physically go get Virginia, she won’t be online.”
“That means we’ll have to go to the Founder’s side of the city, that might not be smart, they’ll be looking for me.”
“Fuck, you’re right... But if we can’t even get to Virginia, how the hell do you expect to get past ANN and her army of robots to Alpha city? We need Ginny, and I think we’re gonna need a different kind of help if we’re going to pull this off.”
“You can’t mean the Squirrel?”
“I don’t think we have a choice, he’s the only one with modern enough tech to get into the old industrial levels, and he does have some interesting tools to deal with Bots…”
“But he’s slime! A rotten no-good self serving asshole! And you know, he won’t do it without a price, his deals are always unfair, always, sometimes dangerously so. You know he deals in bio-weapons, it’s too big a risk Brook.”
“Yeah I think we’re past that now Bronx,” I said flatly, I was getting tired of his shit “we have to end this and we have to be ready to do some things you might not feel alright about. You need to get it through your fucking head. People are dying and will keep dying, and it’s your fault… so stop fucking sniveling about unfair deals and do what needs doing.” His silence gave me so much satisfaction, not giving him a chance to respond. “Morty, thank you for your kind protection in our time of need,” I curtsied to him, a little joke we had since I was wee and he was trying to teach me to be a proper lady, nothing else stuck to his chagrin. “Meryl, get ready for the run to get Virginia,” Meryl nodded silently, “I am going to go see a squirrel and about a certainly rotten deal.” I said this staring at Bronx, he just looked away, afraid to keep my gaze for long. I was beginning to wonder if he knew about Paris, if he knew what she was.
“Be safe out there Little Brooky, remember to bring me a bottle next time you’re through this way.” Said Morty, there was a deep sadness in the old man’s voice, like he was seeing me for the first and last time. He had said goodbye to so many people in his life, poor man had more heartache than a person should have.
The current bosses of the Devils Elbow had been in control of the locals for over sixty years, this was in part because of Foamy. His name was Mathers Foamanowski, when he was a human. That was before near death forced him into his current state.
It was just after the race riots of ‘47. The street gangs were scattered, leaderless, constantly fighting for dominance over each other. He and his family somehow got an advantage, no one knows how it happened, but their tech was suddenly better, they were wearing advancements no one had ever seen, using cool new laser-guns and bio-weapons! They quickly began cleaning up the streets and making deals with the fractured gangs. They all eventually pledged their allegiance to the family, or perished. It was during the last raid when Mathers was fatally wounded. The street gang found him before his men, and as a sick joke, uploaded his consciousness into a rig permanently attached to a biologically advanced squirrel. Though his men did come to his rescue and desolated the gang members, the transfer, up until this point, has been irreversible. He has been stuck in the body of a squirrel for the entirety of that sixty years. He has had a long time and a lot of access to make the best of his situation, now riding around in a human like robo-body, but he is still angry about it. So angry. No amount of tech or vengeance could cool the rage of having to live you life as a hyper-intelligent squirrel. And this was the person I now had to convince to join our little party. He alone had the tech that could get us access. But what was it going to cost me...
