I saw the sign that opened up my slanty eyes

I feel like the name of this art gallery is painfully submissive. Just A Hint of Asia, because us Asians don’t want to be threatening and lose our “positive stereotype” (NO STEREOTYPE IS POSITIVE) status.

Because more than a hint would be a menace to the white people who live in this small mountain town. Too much exotic Asian, no thank you! Just give us enough to feel like we have diversity in our lives and we’ll call it good.

Because more than a hint would require the gallery owner to give out mandarin oranges and buckets of Asian Zing wings from B-Dubs.

Because more than a hint would break the archetype of mysterious, stoic Asian.

Or maybe this is a covert meeting space for Asians in AA?

Why White Guys are Attracted to Asian Women... (?!?!)

This article right here.....I don't know whether to laugh or be incredulous/frustrated. To be frank, my reaction was both and started off with me chuckling at the idiocy of the article and ending with absolute frustration. 

How can a "writer" (I use that term loosely) espouse that it is a myth that white men are attracted to Asian women because of their supposed submissiveness, and then in the same article speak to how Asian women are respectful and loyal with "special characteristics" like "beauty and the promise to stay beautiful", "feminine features" and our "peaceful attitude" and topping it off that because of our "petite stature" we naturally make men feel like a "protector" (which is what all men want...apparently). 

Later in the comments, Asian women who challenge what this “writer” presents are accused of being "Americanized", as if growing up in a westernized society should strip us of our Asian identity.

News flash: anybody who grew up in a certain society is going to embody certain aspects of that society. But the fact of the matter remains that these are the facts: as an Asian woman, I get to identify what the characteristics that define me are. 

I cannot stress enough that the practice of defining ABAs (American Born Asians) and CBA (Canadian Born Asians) as anything less than Asian is damaging. As much as the next progressive, left-wing liberal will say that they are “colour blind”, our experiences and our lives are not colour blind despite your being so. When you say Asian women who do not display your stereotypical notions of what characteristics Asian women are supposed to display are nothing more than “too Americanized”, you white-wash our collective racist experiences, from the micro to the macro. From the childhood “ching ching ling long” eye-pull incidences to the time as adults we overhear “fucking slants” on the street in the middle of downtown Vancouver and to the time we were handed racist hate propaganda that called for the death of our male and infant counterparts and banishment of our female and children to a remote island (just like those good ol’ days of the Chinese leper islands right?). If I present as what you perceive as an angry Americanized, white-washed “asian” (with a little ‘a’) woman - it’s because I have every right to. My colourful history and brushes with racism from the micro to the macro level from the time that I was a child to now and my experiences as an Asian women navigating a world and a city where yellow fever is rampant justifies the anger and the resentment that I feel.  It is not enough for me to simply genetically be an Asian woman with 100% of my ancestry being Chinese, to be defined as Asian. It is not enough for my female Asian counterparts to simply be genetically Asian. For you, white man who is attracted to Asian women, despite the fact that you challenge the idea that white men are attracted to Asian women because of the colonial, fetishized and submissive history, you expect your Asian women to be “petite, loyal, respectful to their men and in need of protection”. Those who challenge are you Americanized/white-washed.

When I think about it, I do not feel sad that I am “Americanized” and that I am more like my “loud mouthed white, feminazi” counterparts than my apparent “loyal, respectful, petite and peaceful” counterparts. While I hold great pride and identity in my Asian heritage, I am not oblivious to the glaring gender parity issues that exist within many Asian cultures.  I am proud that I am an “Americanized”, loud-mouthed and opinionated because it means that I recognize the following about my larger Asian counterpart’s cultures:

That infant femicide in places like China and India because the cultural norms are such that girls are not valued because of their lack of socioeconomic status is not okay

That the rape culture epidemic globally, but notably in recent years, in India, is not okay

That being a gay in an many Asian cultures is still not okay is not okay

That girls like Malala get shot in the head for wanting to go to school is not okay

That there is intense pressure on Asians, but Asian women in particular, to look whiter is not okay

That the pressure to be skinny in East Asia (to fulfil some fallacy of a stereotype that we’re all petite) versus anywhere else is much greater is not okay

That sex tourism based on exactly the myth that Asian women are docile and submissive is not okay

It is not okay to pigeonhole a a single gender from a large, comprehensive and complex area of the world with certain finite characteristic traits and that anybody who is a square peg in this circular hole that you’ve created is anything other than who they really are. I have said it before and I am afraid that I sound like a broken record sometimes, but Asian women are not your “peaceful, respectful, loyal and petite” playthings. We are whole, real and complex human beings with a range of emotions, opinions, personalities and behaviours and none of us are the same. The loud-mouthed Asian who might do things like write for a TV network series (Ali Wong anybody?) and might be over size 10, 145 pounds and 5′6 “ tall is just as Asian as the quite petite Asian girl who grew up in Asia and who seemingly fulfills all of your stereotypical characteristic traits. You, as a non-Asian person does not get to define what is or is not Asian or too Americanized because you do not live our experiences.  We are not your respectful, loyal, petite and playful China Dolls. We are full human beings. If you’re finding Asian women who fulfil these characteristics traits that you hold so dearly, realize that it has nothing to do with their “Asianness” but everything to do with just their individual personalities. If you think that only Asian women from Asia embody these characteristic traits that you so desire and that anything opposite is a symptom of growing up in North America - please, I invite you to share your thoughts with any Chinese woman who was a Red Guard during the Chinese Cultural Revolution and see how kindly they take to your ideas of what Asian women are.  Sincerely, An “Americanized/Asian” Asian

The fact is, things aren’t getting better fast enough for Asians in Hollywood.

For the record: I am angry.  Be angry with me.  Know that this is not new. It's tired and it's crazy. This is a pervasive and invariably dismissed issue. Why?

"It's not surprising that directors want to hire big names to attract producers and funding, but when they want to do stories about Asians and won't cast Asian actors, they should know that the blowback against that has been building for the better part of a century."

Rage in the desert

I find it annoying that I feel bad/guilty/sorrynotsorry about the angry outburst I had earlier this week when K and I were hiking in Zion National Park.

It was hot. Really hot. Did I mention we were in the desert?

As we made our way down from the upper Emerald Pools back to the trailhead, a women mumbled something as I passed her. I heard her say to K, “No speak English?”

The woman was European-American looking. My stereotypical guess would be that she was from Anywhere USA, aka the suburbs. I turned around and drove my death stare into her head as I said, “I SPEAK ENGLISH.”

She proceeded to ask us vague questions (“How much longer?”) like a child might inquire during a road trip. “TO WHERE?” I demanded clarification, anger and impatience setting the tone of my voice.

Ignorant to my agitated verbal cues, the woman continued on with her line of questioning, as if K and I were forest rangers. She possessed the same tone I’d encountered when working retail—entitled and put out that we were not answering her questions to her liking.

Nevermind the fact that K and I noticed ~75% of the people we encountered speaking languages other than English (it seemed many people were visiting from various European countries) and that the woman’s inquiry of my (and possibly K’s) ability to speak English was absolutely justified. The shit that got under my skin was her condescending broken English. “No speak English?” God dammit lady, just say, “Do you speak English?”!!!

It’s as if the accumulated rage I’d built up over the years from watching people make fun of the way Asian characters talk on t.v., in movies, and real life bubbled up and out of me, scalding that woman.

Thanks desert heat. You really know how to bring it out of people.
