You knew it since the beginning. Spencer Reid would mess with your head like no one did.
You could think that this was the start of some love story. Falling at first sight with the dorky genius that sat across your desk in the bullpen. It could have been like that, only if he liked you. Or at least give the attention you wanted so bad. Instead, his social skills were almost none, but when he remembered, he wouldn't shut up.
He wouldn't stop nagging you.
Telling you how wrong about things you were even if he didn't even made the effort to listen to you.
How irresponsible and dumb your ideas were when it came to find an unsub.
It ticked you off but you never did anything. You ignored him. You did it before you answered with sarcasm and got him stuttering because he would think it was serious.
You always played around. Said things to lift the mood after a case and one day, he had it. You didn't know what got him so snappy or on your ass for trying to lift the mood, but he went off on you.
"Can you just shut up? This is serious, L/n. Two people just died and you are thinking about playing with the moment? Are you even listening to yourself? No one wants to listen to you make jokes about yourself!" The others stopped smiling, even if they had only started seconds ago because of your joke. All eyes were on him, most of them, confused.
Your eyes blink in confusion but mostly hurt. Okay, he would nag you daily but raising his voice in your face? No. Never. "I...are you talking to me right now? Just checking, because last time I checked that's not how you talk to people, genius."
"Of course I'm talking to you. You didn't hear L/n? Wait, yeah, you are not even listening to yourself speak. That's irritating!" He huffed in rage and frustation.
You take a step back and put a hand up between you and him. "You got to chill. No need to speak or rather elevate your voice at me. I didn't know my jokes were that offensive to you. I'm putting myself down in my jokes, not you. So...why the hell are you mad?" A head tilt, arms crossed over you chest."
"You are so irritating. Always being dumb about the most simple things and then you won't shut up!" Hands up, gesticulating loudly.
"Hey, guys, can you both take a deep breath, please?" JJ's sweet voice cut through the tension.
"And you guys don't see it, do you? Since she entered the team it's not the same thing. Emily is alive and here, why isn't she going back to her unit?" Spencer's words cut deep. So deep that all the jokes you made about yourself suddenly seemed true. You had a bit of darker humour, against yourself. Self sabotage and self bullying to make the others smile. So now, even after his hurtful words, his snapping and Morgan putting his hand on Spencer's shoulder, you looked in the dept of his eyes.
You took a deep breath and Garcia could see it in your face. You wanted to snap back, you had enough of him looking down on you. You were already in a shitty mindspace and his words phisically hurt.
"Since you must remember everything, listen to me very clearly." You take slow steps towards him, ponctuacting every sentence you spoke. "Your fucking mouth should shut up when nothing good is coming out of it. Do you think you should have an opinion on my every step? Can't you see that you are making me feel like a particle of dust in the air? I can be as smart as you are, not in knowledge but in praticality, instead you can't even run straight. And since you think you are sooo smart, let me tell you. You are a special type of book. One that has rude comments about me every. single. time." Your hand pushing him back once. "Search your freaking brain for all the times you have been inconveniently stupid. Do it!"
He gulped. The team not intervening anymore.
"What? Did you think the good and nice girl who has been listening to you ramble about how stupid she can be wouldn't fight back? If you have a problem with me, just say it. Oh, wait, you can't. Because emotions are hard for you to handle. Then process all of this." You gesticulated big just like he had done. "Obsessed much."
Head back, eyes rolling as you take your wallet and phone and walk to the elevator.
"Damn." Morgan whispered and sat down.
"Shut it, Morgan." Spencer rumbles under his breathe.
"What's going on?" Emily asks as she arrives at the scene after a meeting with Hotch.
Spencer stormed off the bullpen and JJ followed after him whispering a soft "Spence", like always.
Emily looks between Morgan, Garcia and Rossi.
Garcia stays mouth open, looking at your desk. "They just...fought. Y/n answered Reid and they stormed off..."
Days later, none of you talked to each other. No one apologised. You didn't have to. He started this for himself. He did this. He...
Your eyes find his form walking to Garcia's cave. You sigh. Disgust and hate were two things you felt about being mad at someone. It made your stomach hurt. Anxiety and repression.
Meanwhile, Spencer sat beside Garcia, head on the table beside Garcia's multiple trinkets.
"Are you going to talk to me, my friend? Or are you going to sulk and keep touching my pens?" Garcia's eyes travelled to Spencer's.
"She thought I was...looking down on her. I just corrected her in somethings and talked with her about possible resolutions of cases." Spencer fidgets with one of Garcia's many pens. "I didn't think much of it. I was making her a favour..."
"When you mentioned a month ago that you thought she was weird, what did mean by that?" The blonde tech queen turns her chair to face him.
"I was just saying that she gets on my nerves. She makes me think about her thoughts and how her brain works. She knows things I don't. It... It is not fair. It's not fair for her to know things I don't." He puffed his cheeks.
"So, let me see if I understood. You think she is too smart yet doesn't know things, so you have to correct her? And you keep jabbing her ego because you want to get a reaction out of her? Is that it, my wonderful friend? Are you trying to get her attention?" Garcia smirks knowingly.
"What? No. Why would I want her attention? She's irritating with her good humour, and smile. And also, those keychains and cute cardigans- What I mean is...she..." Spencer huffs and look up at the ceiling as the tech analyst looks at him with a curious glance. "She...challenges me. Everyone tells me to shut up. She doesn't."
"Oh, my love, I'm going to tell you that my theory still stands. You get her on her breaking point because you like to see her mad. You like the attention. Her attention."
Spencer's eyes become wide like a light suddenly illuminated his brain with his friend's help. "No... no. I don't want her attention..."
"Y/n?" Garcia turns around pretending to call you to see what Spencer's reaction would be.
Immediately, Spencer sits straighter on the chair. Arranges his crooked tie, his hair, starts to fidget with the buttons of his jacket and gulps, looking at the door. Garcia's saw it so clearly now.
"You, sweet boy, are in love with Y/n." Laughter echoes in the cave. Spencer folds himself in the chair. "You were trying to impress her? Were you nagging her as if trying to flirt? You like to see her huff. That's not how do to it, Spencer."
The boy hit his face in the back of the chair and groans after understanding what he had done to you. Only because he thought you looked hot while pissed. "I messed up...really bad."
Garcia bumps her pompom pen against his head. "Next time you want to flirt, please come to me instead of insulting your crush like there is no tomorrow. And you should go apologise too. She must hate you right now." Her sing song voice entered Spencer's brain. It was making him overthink. Did he really like you to the point he wasn't secure of his knowledge about relationships to ruin everything and any chances he had with you?
Now you felt it. His eyes on you. Every time you turned to look at him, you catch a glance of his puppy eyes looking away from you.
It has been almost two weeks since you two talked if not for work and when it was extremely necessary. And you. Everyone could see him walk to you before he turns the other way pretending he got it wrong. That he forgot some report to finish.
You didn't want to be the one to reach out first. In your head, you shouldn't. He was the one who looked down on you, who mentioned your unwanted presence on the team, him who liked to explain things to you like you were dumb. Slight bitterness accompanied your tongue and mind.
You closed off again, like in the beginning, when you join the team.
He noticed. He finally noticed. How your head would fall after a difficult case, but yet you tried to be there for them. He knew this before; he just didn't want to see it. His eyes stalked you around the bullpen, moving in patterns. Desk - water - candy - focus again for hours - get up for a break - and repeat. Anxiety and routine security. He had deduced.
He had to man up and do something. Every single member of the team had told him to.
One day, during one of your breaks, he follows after you. His hands got sweaty, his long sleeve seemed to tighten around his neck. Again, when he was about to turn, he took a deep breath and reached for you. His eyes look up from his hand around your wrist, locking with yours. He froze. Nothing. He couldn't talk anymore.
His brain was short-circuiting as your gaze stays on his.
He didn't do feelings. He always messed up when he tried and people got hurt.
Footsteps approaching him. He didn't move. You were close, yet he didn't move an inch.
Lips were moving, probably calling his name or asking questions and all he could think of was how close you were and how pretty you looked and how he would have just to lean in and kiss you. Kiss the words out of your mouth how he had fantasized before when you got irritated or huffed at him. Pupils dilated. Head leaning in. And a... slap.
Cold skin against his cheek. Eyes blinking as he finally snaps back to reality.
"You slapped me." His voice came out softly and quite offended.
"I did. You wouldn't answer." Eyebrows eased, looking at him. Heart going crazy, you couldn't lie. You had slapped him by instinct, he got too close, too fast.
"You slapped me!" His mouth hangs open as he looks at you.
"What? You weren't answering, and you were too close. And maybe...just maybe I've been wanting to do this for a long time." You had thought about it before. After all the moments he got you all hot and enraged.
"Okay...fair. But you hit hard."
"If you whine more, I'll slap you again."
"...Do it..."
Now he had done it. Your head twitches, your eyebrows raised even more. Eyes intermittently blinking.
"Repeat that again? It's usually subtitles in my head."
"Do it. I... I deserve it. I was the worst person ever when I talked about you and your level of intelligence, which is perfect, I'm the weird one here. Also, I'm not good at- ouch!" He looks at you as another slap is delivered to his left side now.
"You asked for that. And you told me I could." You shrug.
His face falls forward and he sighs. Maybe it was too much. And he was apologising for acting like a jerk. Halfway up, your hand stretches to touch his cheek, now softly, to invest the damage before he continues to talk.
"I was trying to...flirt... And as I was saying, I'm not good with feelings. And me bullying you was me thinking that you would give me attention if I kept going, plus I...I..." Flabbergasted, yup. That was how you were right now. Genuinely, you thought he hated you. After multiple tries to make conversation in the past and trying to make him like you, this was highly unexpected.
"I'll stop you right there. Go back...you what?" Your gazes lock on each other as your hands come together as for hearing a prayer. "Flirt? With me? That? Couldn't you just bring me coffee? Chocolates? I love chocolate."
His hands mess up his hair. "I know. I know that right now. And I know you love chocolate and cinnamon rolls. And I also know of your passions, likes, dislikes, what you know, how you react to things and how utterly stupid I was."
"All of that to get my attention? Spencer, you just had to ask. I never wanted to dislike you, but you made me." Simple explanation with a whole truth in it.
"So, I ruined it? Every chance I had?" Puppy eyes looked back into yours as he moved closer.
"You swear you only wanted to date me, and you didn't mean any of it?" You were still sceptical with reason.
Deep breath in, deep breath out. He stepped up and took your face in his hands. A big thing for Spencer who barely shared touches. "You were hot. When you got pissed at me. A lot of those times, I did it on purpose, to see you mad. That was not cool, at all." Head shaking as he leans his forehead on yours.
Minutes go by with no voices or conversations exchanged. Sucking in the moment. Before he pushes you inside a room. Back against the wall as he trapped you there. "Can I... Can I kiss you, please? I'll never talk bad about and at you. I swear. I'll take you for coffee and bring you chocolates or those collection figures you have. I'll make up for it, I'm so sorry."
"You are begging. Just don't get down on your knees and I might let- no!" A braincell just busted because you were not expecting him to actually get on his knees. "Get up, right now. G-get up, Spencer." Your hands rest on his shoulders as he leans his head on your stomach. "Spencer..."
"I'm really sorry, Y/n." A broken "I'm sorry" that sounded so sad. Attached with distress.
Your fingers brush through his hair, making him look up, puppy eyes once again. "Get up, will you? Plus, you can kiss me after-"
Too late. His brain focused on kiss and in an instant, he was up and kissing you with an awful big smile on his face. Big hands cupping your face as the kiss continues. Soft kissing noises came from both of you. hands anchoring him to you.
Once you pull back, he chases your lips and doesn't let go. It changes from desperation to worshipping. He was never this soft with you. Lips leaving yours, stealing kisses all over your face.
"Hey...hey Spencer. Leave something for the first date." He relaxes and hugs you. Head on the crock of your neck.
You gave in to the hug, taking the rare opportunity to hug him.
One month later, he wouldn't stop making eyes at you at work, on your dates together. Nowhere.
"Can you at least try to be subtle?" The sound of fingers typing on the keyboard sounded around the bullpen after a long day of paperwork and no recent cases.
"No. I'm good." He tilts he head on his hand and leans back on his chair.
"Don't you have work to do?" You glance up from my glasses. Used only for screen time.
"Already finished everything." A little smirk on his lips, looking quite proud at your small irritation.
"Want to do mine, since you are doing nothing?"
"Should I? I don't know if I should." It's has been hours of paper after paper, but he seemed just fine, while your eyed were beginning to hurt. He rolls his chair over to your desk and kisses your cheek, sliding the pc in front of him. "What do you need?"
A smile painted your face as he actually offered to do your job. "Review the last opened reports and finish the third one on the pyramid murder case."
Cheeky attitude came out as he pokes his cheek. "My motivation." Side eyes directed at you.
Your lips touch his cheek before he starts to work on your documents.
"Keep the glasses. It makes me want to finish faster so we can go home." He dodges your little slap and chuckles.
"Spencer." Not a minute of peace with this boy.
"Remember, if you get mad and keep the glasses, you get hotter, sweetheart." An embarrassing and not at all menacing threat thrown in your ear in a form of a whisper as he resumed his writing like nothing happened.
Somehow, Spencer had learned how to flirt in no time. And you? Complaining? No. You answered back to make him blush.
"Which one are you choosing? The bed or the couch?" You whisper back, making his fingers stop typing for a second. Then, a soft whisper came.
"The bed".
"Get a room you two!" Morgan said teasingly, but also as he mentioned before, "It was weirder to watch Reid flirt than recite books."
Both of you just chuckled acknowledging the comment before focusing back on the documents with a clear goal. Going home.
