Name: Aniksosaurus darwini
Name Meaning: Darwin's Spring Lizard
First Described: 2006
Described By: Martinez & Novas
Classification: Dinosauria, Saurischia, Theropoda, Neotheropoda, Averostra, Tetanurae, Orionides, Avetheropoda, Coelurosauria
Aniksosaurus is a fairly basal member of the coelurosauria group, though it lived later in time than their origin, in the middle Cretaceous about 96-91 million years ago (in the Cenomanian/Turonian age). It lived in the Bajo Barreal Formation of Chubut Province, Argentina, and was a fairly small coelurosaur and may have live din small groups. It probably was feathered, given that it was a coelurosaur. It was originally classified as being more of an advanced coelurosaur, however now it seems to be most closely related to groups in compsognathidae; its full classification is still pretty uncertain. Its remains strongly suggest social behavior, giving it an advantage in its environment. It lived alongside the abelisaurid Xenotarsosaurus, the sauropods Drusilasaura, Epachthosaurus, and Campylodoniscus, the hadrosaur Secernosaurus, and carcharodontosaurids and dromaeosaurids. It probably was between 2 and 3 meters long.
