Ngl the way this site talks about veganism and vegetarianism (as in, opposing it) so often blatantly ignores and erases cultures where that’s the standard diet and it’s slowly driving me insane

Veganism as in the specific movement under that name is a relatively new western in origin phenomenon, but dharmic religions among others have been promoting avoidance of animal products for literal centuries, typically under the name of vegetarianism + specific terms (e.g. ahimsa in Jain philosophies). Portraying avoidance of foods and products derived from nonhuman animals as a solely white western thing is blatantly erasing these millennia old cultures.

Not to be taboo - but part of the reason why I became invested in animal liberation was my own experience of being deprived humanity due to various dispriviledges. It was precisely being seen as “Just an Animal” that drove me to become vocal about how we shouldn’t decry non-human life as being automatically meaninglessly inferior to ourselves. And if I can be imaginative for a moment - Growing up with that experience made me realize that if we were to discover alien life... many humans would actively seek to impose a worldview in which even the most obvious displays of non-human intelligence were somehow invalid due to “Soullessness” or otherwise deprived of whatever “Essence” which awards meaningful individual existence for that human’s perspective.  Ultimately however - there is a certain tribalism behind human psychology which greatly challenges any ability to have this discussion. To even suggest that animal lives have meaning and weight in the greater scheme of the world is seen as a challenge to the meaning and value of human lives. It’s a very similar process to how whenever transgender women get recognition, an angry group of cisgender people will suddenly begin complaining about how transgender women are somehow being placed above cisgender women.  And the ironic thing is that there is a real human cost that results from the suffering we inflict upon animals. Working on operations like a CAFO, or more directly a slaughterhouse is dangerous physically and psychologically traumatizing to the people who work there. (Who are themselves often dispriviledged groups, such as immigrants, etc.)  I think that the only people who should ever make comparisons to events of genocide (The Shoah, etc) are the people directly affected. However the fundamental idea that human and animal deaths are completely and totally ethically, morally, spiritually, rhetorically distinct in such a way as to make any comparison laughable - is incredibly harmful for our ability to empathically respond to the humans deprived of personhood around the world.

Its their right to say whatever the fuck they want just like its yours to be a little bitch about it and I have seen like 453094563945 posts by people saying this shit and literally 0 where anyone has done anything that they are not entitled to say or think or feel.

And, actually its not like any of this matters because we are all animals. These people u bitch about being such aggressive cunts are the ones who would help you if you were in need and the people acting like they are hounded by vegans (because vegans are the majority of the world duh) are the ones who probably dont give 2 shits about anything but themselves.

Hey, I appreciated your reply to that post I reblogged. I'm possibly the least hostile person ever but since going vegan I've been feeling very bad about that because there are a lot of more outspoken people in the movement that seem to even be somewhat hostile towards other vegans for campaigning in friendlier ways and it makes me kind of nervous to speak up sometimes. Any way, it's nice to know that people share this view. I hope you are well :)

It's kinda ridic to think of animals as being grateful to or loving of vegan humans. They don't owe you shit. They don't know shit about our ideologies.
