Animal of the Week: Brush-Tailed Mulgara

Meet the animal Monday! This week, we have a marsupial known as the Brush-Tailed Mulgara(Dasycercus blythi). This little creature may look like a little herbivore, but it's actually a fearsome carnivore!

I started studying behavioral biology this year 🌿 Since I have to watch several Dokumentations in one week I decided to start this new series: Animal of the week ✨

This weeks animal of the week: Sandpiper (Calidris)

The Sandpipers belong to the waders or shorebirds and include quite a lot of species. They love to eat small invertebrates.

Sandpipers have looong legs and bodies (work it girl!!), and narrow wings. They measure 12 to 66cm.

They have quite a cosmopolitan distrubution, occurring most of the world's land surface exept for Antartica and the driest deserts. Who would like to live there anyways? A majority breed at moderat to high latitudes in the Northern Henisphere.

Oh and they are reaaally cute. Duh.

Conservation: Owston's Palm Civet

Conservation Tuesday! The Owston's Palm Civet(Chrotogale owstoni) is, unfortunately, Endangered. It has a high extinction risk due to its rapid population decline(over 50% within its last three generations). This is mainly because of over-exploitation, the wild meat industry, snares, and habitat destruction.

Fun Fact Friday: West African Slender-Snouted Crocodile

Fun Fact! West African Slender-Snouted Crocodiles(Mecistops cataphractus), despite their unnerving appearances, can be amazing parents. The mothers will guard their nests until the eggs hatch. She will then dig up the nest and very gently help the remaining unhatched babies to hatch by carefully cracking their shells. The mother and sometimes the father will then protect the young until they become independent.

Fun Fact Friday: Travancore Cat Skink

Fun fact! The Travancore Cat Skink(Ristella travancorica) is called a cat skink because it has retractable claws like a cat! This is very unusual for a reptile, as it's only really found in cat skinks like this one and a few kinds of geckos!!

*the animal pictured is actually Rurk's Cat Skink, a close relative of the Travancore Cat Skink

Fun Fact Friday: Ring-Tailed Vontsira

Fun Fact! Ring Tailed Vontsiras(Galidia elegans) are very commonly found in pairs, sometimes with or without pups! These pairs don't seem to be two mates, and although that could be an explanation, it seems more likely that these pairs are friends, siblings, or a mother and one of her older pups, as female vontsiras can have two litters per year.

The Red-Bellied Newt(Taricha rivularis) is Vulnerable, and is in need of help. Some ways you can help are by cleaning up trash and never releasing pets into the wild, especially if you are in their native range in California. You can also support organizations dedicated to restoring natural habitats and/or removing invasive animals.
