BOOK CLUB: "NOT A BOX"
THE GIST OF IT:
Summary: Author Antoinette Portis shares about the creative joys of playing with a cardboard box that every kid (and adult) should experience... because essentially, "it's not a box" actually, but rather an unending list of fun possibilities!
Project Type: Read & Learn (or in the case of video, Watch & Learn)
For ages: 3+
Time Needed: 30 minutes
Teaches Kids: imagination, thinking "outside-the-box", creativity
To Get Book: Amazon, Amazon Used, Barnes & Noble, Powell's Used, or your local library (you can request book to be transferred to your branch)
RELATED ACTIVITIES:
CHARADES: Write ideas on slips of paper, take turns pulling out slips, and play charades with the box (e.g., "refrigerator" --> put box upright vertically; pretend to open door to pour a glass of milk; other players guess; correct person acts next; for kids who can't read, draw pictures or whisper to them)
YOUNG AUTHORS: Make personalized illustrated version of the book; if you can print and bind it, kids would go crazy! Check out this site for more options.
ANIMATION STATION: If you are techy, you can make an animation too! If not so techy (like me), settle for the book version and record your kid and his/her "not-a-box" as you voice over with narration
GET YOUR BOX ON: Get a sturdy box (refrigerator or big diaper boxes are the best) and join your kid in playing pretend or you can buy new boxes.
PHOTOSHOOT: Snap photos of your imagination creations and make posters or a fun book via MyPublisher or Shutterfly!
