The Coolest Moscow museums
Thereâs more to museums than dull display cases stuffed with exhibits â and away from the mainstream Moscow has several unique and fascinating collections to explore. For an alternative insight into the cityâs culture, try a trip to one of these three.
Museum of Russian Vodka
Few things are more closely associated with Russia than vodka, the national tipple. The museum boasts a collection which spans the 500-year history Russian vodka from the earliest stills to the modern-day industry. Among the exhibits are 600 different types of the drink, old recipes dating back to the 18th century, photos and advertizing displays through the ages and historical bottles. The star exhibit is an example of the very first distillation kit â the tools to create the first vodka back in the 15th century.
For most visitors, though, the highlight is the Vodka Degustation session. In a Russian Traktir â modeled on the bars of 19th-century Russian towns â guests can enjoy a huge range of vodka and all the traditional âzakuskyâ or snacks that accompany an authentic drinking session â pickles, pirozhki, blini with caviar. At the end of the tour you can buy great souvenirs drinking sets with glasses, gift sets of famous vodka brands.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Machines
Guys, you canât miss this! With more than 40 old-school arcade machines â many of them in full working order and waiting for you to test your skills â itâs great fun!
The excursion explains how, although arcade machines were invented in America back in the 19th century, Soviet citizens encountered them for the first time only in 1971 at the the International Arcade Machines Exhibition in Gorky park. That event inspired Soviet manufacturers to produce their own consoles â the likes of âMorskoi Boiâ (Sea Battle) and âZimnaya Okhotaâ (Winter Hunt), as well as sports games â all operated by 15-kopek coins available from the ticket office.
As well as the games machines, you can see incredible examples of Soviet advertising products: stunning booklets, which are attached to the machines â they were designed in a futuristic manner and promised an âunreal feeling in real life.â
Definitely worth a visit
