Animation Proposal: Report

This was my final submission for this assignment, containing a report on my proposed animation, which consists of the introduction, theme(s), target audience, setting, plot, plot analysis, information about the main character and landscape (e.g. description, personality, appearance, habits, colour scheme, art style and character references/inspirations)  and finally the bibliography.

Animation Proposal: Storyboard

For my storyboard, I wanted to do it like an animatic instead of doing a normal storyboard where you have multiple panels in one page showing what is going on in your animation.

I made this by drawing each frame in Adobe Photoshop and once I was finished with the frame(s), I exported them as png files and imported those images into Adobe Flash where I put them in multiple frames and adjusted the gap between each frame with an fps of 10.

Animation Proposal: Finalised Plot

I made a few changes to the plot, although it is still very similar to the previous draft of the plot and this new plot doesn’t change anything important.

        The year is 2500; London, along with the other major cities on Earth end up being an apocalyptic wasteland due to a massive storm that engulfed the planet a few hundred years ago.

        Life has bounced back, although the storm had taken a toll on the population of all lifeforms on Earth. At a glance, the only lifeforms that seem to remain are small creatures such as rodents and reptiles, although there are bigger creatures that are also present; mainly deadly, tiger-like predators that feed on other mammals, and have started to devour humans over the past few decades to the point where humanity was nearly wiped out. The remaining humans stay in hidden shelters to protect themselves from the harsh weather and mainly, the man-eaters. The humans only come out at certain times during the day when the predators are inactive.

        The main character is a lone traveller located in London who thinks he is the last human remaining on Earth due to the death of his partner, who was killed by a man-eater while gathering resources a few years ago. They always travelled as a pair, searching for other humans, hoping to try and rebuild society; but have not found signs of other human life in the area, which had led them to believe that they are the last humans on Earth and due to her death and years of search for human life that have led to nothing, he now truly believes that he is the last human on Earth.

        A few days later, a small earthquake occurs, which caused some old, abandoned building to collapse. The earthquake damages some parts of the main character’s shelter and after a few hours of light aftershocks, the main character surveys the area to check how much damage the earthquake had dealt. He decides to look around the area for some parts/materials that can be used to repair his home and stumbles upon a tunnel that was revealed by the earthquake as it was once covered by sand. He decides to go in to see whether he could find something of use and discovers an old, but operational radio. He goes through the different frequencies and hears some muffled voices that later turn out to be other humans. He later learns that other humans from different locations scattered around the globe have been communicating through radio and he also finds out that they are planning to travel to a central location to try and rebuild society.

Animation Proposal: Ideas

I did some brainstorming to see what elements I could put together to create the story for my animation.

As I did with my other assignments, I wrote down my ideas in bullet point format as a starting point:

Post-apocalyptic genre

Occurs in the future

Uses dark colours 

Time period: year 2500

Art style: 2D - most likely digitally drawn using Adobe Photoshop

Target audience: teens/adults

Main character: male, lone traveller

Plot ideas:

The character is alone due to his partner dying due to an incident that occurred many years before the story takes place.

He could be travelling alone, searching for something or someone, maybe find other people.

Perhaps the reason why he is travelling alone is due to him being the ‘last man on Earth.’

And since I chose to base my animation around the post-apocalyptic genre, I looked at some movies/shows/games that I could look at for more ideas; I chose to look at mainly Mad Max: Fury Road (movie), Mad Max (video game), The 100 (TV Show), Avatar: The Last Airbender (TV Show) and Legend of Korra (TV Show). 

I decided to look at Mad Max (the game and the movie) and The 100 for ideas on the landscape/atmosphere, as well as the idea of rebuilding civilisation that The 100 has. Even though Avatar and Legend of Korra aren’t the same genre as my proposed animation and the other sources I looked at, I wanted to use the art style as an inspiration for drawing my storyboard and concept art.

Animation Proposal: Brief

Our new assignment was to create a written treatment of a proposed animation with a duration of 4-6 minutes. We had to plan the creation of an animation but not make the actual animation.The treatment includes the plot, target audience, character description, genre, art style, the theme and the setting and the report containing all these needed to be ~2,000 words in length.

We also had to create a mood board, concept art and a scene by scene storyboard.
