ANIME REVIEW: Tokyo Ghoul

TOKYO GHOUL (Toukyo Kushu) by ISHIDA Sui

Genre: Action / Drama / Horror / Psychological / Seinen / Supernatural

The suspense horror/dark fantasy story is set in Tokyo, which is hunted by mysterious "ghouls" who are devouring humans. People are gripped by the fear of these ghouls whose identities are masked in mystery. An ordinary college student named Kaneki encounters Rize, a girl who is an avid reader like him at the cafe he frequently goes to. Little does he know that his fate will change overnight. Note: This review is for the purpose of entertainment and commentary under terms of fair use. Also, this is according to my own opinion. May contain spoilers so... read at your own risk.

Story and Characters: 7 out of 10

Okay, first of all the story came out as more of a cliche. Why? It's because in most anime's like this one, the hero starts of as a weak character. Then all of a sudden a certain event will change the hero's destiny. Just like what happened to Kaneki Ken, he's a 19 year old college student and after encountering Rize. His life gets all complicated with him getting stuck in two separate worlds - The Ghoul world and The Human world - But still, for me out of all those kinds of hero's Kaneki is different in some ways. I guess as the story progresses he turns into a anti-hero which is cool BTW. The progression of the animated series is quite different from the manga series. How? Well, it's because the pace of the animated series is a bit quick unlike in the manga series which is very detailed but still the story and character's didn't change, so rest assured that when you jump into the manga series you won't be completely lost. I guess what I'm trying to say is, it really is much better if the series is a little bit longer. Now, about the characters, in all honesty they are likable because they all have there own stories that really incorporates well in the series and the bond between these characters, really is strong. Although some of them are really and I MEAN really twisted. Which is cool.

Animation and Sound: 8 out of 10

Now, the animation isn't that bad and isn't that great either, I guess it's just right. Though, I may not be a very observant person, I have seen quite a few flaws. But nonetheless the soundtrack did all it's wonder's because I actually love the songs used. It matches all the atmosphere of the anime. Also, the voice actors really did a great job because they embodied the characters well.

Enjoyment: 7 out of 10

Yeah, I did really love the gore but because of the censorring of the best parts I didn't quite enjoy it to the fullest. I have to read the manga for me to know what it really looked like and to tell you the truth it was awesome. Well, me enjoying another persons misery is kinda weird but that's how it is. Other than the censoring I really wanted Ishida-san to give more Kaneki and Touks a go. I mean, just a few chapters of them kissing is okay. Since I really ship them so hard.

Overall: 22 human eyes out of 30 ghoul eyes (let's face it ghoul eyes are cool)

Well, I had my doubts with this anime but, it really is great. I had no regrets well, not completely. I hope you guys to.
