“I won’t take long,” Ethan said with a small smile and a nod in their direction before exiting the room. The coffee was not just to keep him awake but he felt like he also needed to leave the room in order to give Julie and Roger some privacy with their daughter. Besides, he also wanted a smoke… he needed to relieve some stress caused by being in the place he despised.
After finishing his cigarette, Ethan went to where the coffee vending machine was and as he waited in line; a couple of nurses began talking. He never got into somebody else’s business but what they were saying caught his attention. Both of them were talking about a man arriving almost at the same time Ophelia had been brought in, how he drunkenly had been in a car accident and had injured a pedestrian, too. His jaw clenched, thinking it could be the exact same guy that had injured his girlfriend. And so, he went on to find the room he could be in. Ethan couldn’t just ask about the guy to one of the nurses, they’d ask a name and he obviously didn’t have it.
Quickly walking from one aisle to another, he finally found the room he thought it to be the right one. The guy was in bed, seemed rather peaceful but his bruises and cuts said otherwise; not that Ethan cared about him being comfortable. He carefully walked into the room and saw the guy slowly waking up. “Who are you?”Ethan heard him ask but he only shrugged his shoulders. “Really stupid move the one ye did. Drunk drivin’. Gettin’ people hurt.” He scoffed. “Tha’ morphine really helpin’ ye?” Sure, he was angry about what had happened but he couldn’t do harm to a patient, that would only cause him trouble. “Would be too good for you to get medical attention if somethin’ were to happen.” The look on the guy’s face was pure confusion and slight fear. And while Ethan didn’t yet know what he was going to do, he ended up lowering the amount of morphine he was receiving, noticing how the guy winced. “I won’t be too nice once ye are back on your feet.” Was the last thing Ethan said before leaving the room.
Ethan quickly found the way back to Ophelia’s room and entered carefully, in case she was still asleep. But a smile took over his features once he saw she was awake. “Hello… could you get some proper rest?”
Julie held her daughter in her arms as she let her cry. She had been so terrified when they had called her to tell her what had happened. She had called her ex-husband, and it was nice to not have an argument over something. This was their daughter. They never fought when it came to something happening to any of their children. Despite them all being grown, they were still the most precious thing in the world to her. Having met her boyfriend for the first time, he seemed nice. She appreciated that he had been with her the whole time since she had come in, that she hadn’t been alone.
“It’s alright,” she told her daughter as she gently rubbed her back. Thankfully none of the injuries would leave any permanent damages, they would fix her leg in the morning and she could come home after a few days. The last thing Julie wanted was for her to be alone, maybe it was easier if her boyfriend stayed with her since both herself and her husband worked full-time without being able to be home.
As Ethan came back into the room Ophelia gave him a weak smile and a nod as he asked her if she got any rest. The truth was that she hadn’t, she just wanted to go back to sleep and not wake up for a while. She knew that wouldn’t be possible with her having more procedures in the morning. She had been told that the doctor would be in to see her before she went down in the morning to tell her what was going to happen. All she truly wanted was to go home.
