Looking forward to the St Marie aux Mines show next week, one of the highlights of the mineral and gem show calendar! I remember last year looking at this amazing ‘spherulitic’ calcite. Perfect shape and ‘roundness’ has always been popular to collect and this one was so eye-catching. Perfect ‘balls’ of creamy translucent calcite ‘nestling’ and sitting on what is labelled dolomite but most probably ankerite in brownish-purple curving aggregates giving us such a great contrast. Overall it is just amazing and although it almost looks ‘alien’, it is from Poiana Botizii, Maramures, Romania. Calcite, although a relatively simple substance is a mineral with the most diverse of crystal forms, and there has been a lot of research on the formation of spherulitic growth from impurities such as Mg, sulphate and organic matter to super-saturation, nano-particles and the environment and conditions and ‘time’ in which they grew. I am still astonished how nature can produce such amazing things, and we try to unravel this master artwork! Roll on the show next week, hope to find and post some crazy ‘stuff’! Galena on Ankerite
Size: 3,4 x 4,5 x 3,0 cm
Locality: Smallcleugh Mine, Nenthead, Alston Moor District, Cumbria, England
Do you think the fusion of Poppy Jasper (or any other different jasper) and a Lapis would necesserily make a Malachite?
I know general fan consensus is a Jasper + a Lapis will always = Malachite but I don't think so! Maybe some combinations of Jaspers + Lapis Lazulis may be a Malachite but not all..... personally I would like to think it might be dependent on the color scheme of the two and the nature of their relationship. Some suggestions on a Poppy Jasper + Lapis Lazuli fusion:- Cinnabar - Purple Smithsonite- Ankerite
Millerite, Quartz, Galena and Ankerite - Windsor Colliery, Abertridwr, Glamorgan, Wales
Ironstone nodule has little white ankerite lined clefts with green sprays of millerite orientated on a single galena crystal, to the side is a bipyrimidal quartz crystal
Ankerite - Brownley Hill Mine, Alston Moor, Cumbria, England
