The 5 Main Causes of Ankle Pain
Ankle Pain is one of the most common injuries that we assess and treat at PhysioWorks. Ankle pain has five main causes:
Traumatic injuries eg sprained ankle, broken ankle, high ankle sprain, achilles tendon rupture.
Overuse injuries adjacent to the ankle eg plantar fasciitis, shin splints, heel spur, stress fracture, Achilles tendonitis, peroneal tendonitis, Severs disease, retrocalcaneal bursitis, arthritis.
Biomechanical injuries eg anterior ankle impingement.
Systemic conditions that result in ankle pain eg lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis.
Referred pain eg sciatica
Ankle injuries can potentially occur at any age and as you can see have numerous causes, which is why it is often useful to get a health professional's opinion regarding your ankle pain source.
Having said that, thousands of people suffer an ankle sprain everyday around the world. Just while you’ve been reading this blog a few hundred people have sprained their ankle.
Luckily, these are also one of the easiest to treat well but they can be neglected and result in ankle stiffness, weakness and lack of confidence. How many people do you know who repeatedly "roll their ankle". No one should repeatedly roll their ankle. This normally means that their is a deficit in the ankle muscle reaction time or strength, which can be quickly fixed by the help of your physiotherapist.
While ankle pain can result from a large number of ankle and foot injuries, the most common ankle injuries are sprains (low ankle and high ankle sprains), which involve ligaments and bones in the ankle. But you can also fracture a bone, tear muscles or over-stress a tendon. We just hope it's not you we need to to see next for an ankle injury!
