what i really love abt them (rpf aside lol) is the absolute contrast between lewis's teammate before val, and then val. his time with nico was a very tense one and the competitiveness got the better of their relationship, there were so many games and ugly words. even though he retired at the end of 2016 i don't believe the relationship was salvageable at that point. we can see that even now.

but then valtteri joins mercedes for the 2017 season and one of the first things he and lewis promise is that there won't be any games between them. and that's something lewis has appreciated about valtteri too, that he is honest and lewis knows there won't be games. i like that they both really did try their best to give it a go and while i also know it took a while for them to truly be friends, even from 2017 onwards (like at the hungary gp*) you can see that there is honesty and trust between them. and that's something that's been rare to see with lewis and his teammates. i know people say it's because valtteri was not his competition, but i don't think that's true. for one, valtteri was definitely still trying his best to beat lewis; it was only right at the end that he admitted he couldn't.

(*sorry im still stuck on hungary 2017 for a moment -- lewis literally said the decision to give valtteri his place back came from the heart, not his head. like hello?? it cost him points, esp since seb won that race and the gap between lewis and seb in wdc points got bigger. but lewis still said he wanted to win the right way, and valtteri admitted not every teammate would've done what lewis did. and this is when they weren't even friends!!!)

anyway all that brings us to now... how after 2021, val said he felt like he was the one who'd lost the championship. how despite it all, lewis was happy for val to be thriving at alfa, somewhere he'd be appreciated. how val went on beyond the grid and said he truly believes lewis will win again, that lewis is faster than anyone else. he talks about how lewis has shaped who he is today. the way they just gravitate to each other after being away! like here, this preseason. and here, after 2021! the fact that val has always believed in lewis even when lewis has been down, like his first yr at ferrari! and lewis, constantly praising val too!! and here too! the way they believe in each other!

like sorry but theyre the best duo on the grid i said what i said and i stand by it to my dying breath. and all this is AFTER im sure ive missed a ton but thats what the valewis tag exists for!

HI IM SO SORRY I DIDNT ANSWER THIS FOR SO LONG!!!! but i'm never going to have a perfect answer so here goes!!

i really liked it! not as much as i thought i would, though? my expectations didn't line up exactly with what it was. i think mostly because i didn't really get what was happening for a while also lol.

i loved the writing SO MUCH. "so it goes" will haunt me absolutely forever. the pillar of salt passage in the prologue. also, i love to annotate my books and i read it as a library book so i can't wait to highlight the shit out of my own copy soon!!!!

i think my favorite piece was when he finally met the author he's been obsessing over and it was just some guy lol. also the ruined city described like the surface of the moon. the time skips and travels to space treated incredibly seriously within the narrative. i loved the structure and the syntax and the interesting little pieces of humanity and the fact that there weren't any villans they were all just people and they all were just doing their jobs.

sad 1988 ficlet

A few days late, but @jonny-toews' sad anons got me on the angst train so here's a quick "jonny retires before kaner" ficlet.

Jonny retires.

They crash out of the first round against the Stars, and Jonny retires.

The season ends, they clean out their lockers, and Jonny retires.

“I can’t do it anymore.” Jonny tells Patrick, curled up in their bed with Jonny’s head resting on Patrick’s chest. “My body can’t do it anymore, Kaner.”

“I know.” Patrick soothes, twining his fingers around a lock of hair on Jonny’s head. “It’s okay.”

We were supposed to do this together he wants to tell Jonny, wants to scream it. We were always supposed to do this together.

They started together, they won Cups together, and they were supposed to end this journey together.

But Jonny’s done, and Patrick’s not, and Patrick knows what they say about best laid plans…

Jonny follows Patrick to Buffalo, and they start their offseason like they always do. Dinners with Patrick’s parents and his sisters, lazy days lounging around Patrick’s too-big house, Patrick hiding under a hat and three layers of sunscreen while Jonny tans like the golden god he is out on the boat. Only this time, this time Jonny doesn’t get antsy after a few weeks. He doesn’t push Patrick to start a rigorous training regimen, doesn’t start talking about skating and drills and camp and Patrick knows that Jonny’s not coming back, has known since Jonny first told him he was retiring, but it feels different to see if happening in real time.

To know that, when Patrick gets back on the ice with the Hawks, it won’t be with Jonny.

They go to Winnipeg, like always, spend weeks in Jonny’s favorite space, the place where Jonny seems the most comfortable. Patrick tries to pretend like everything is normal, like he doesn’t feel Jonny pulling away, like it doesn’t feel like Patrick’s own heart is being ripped out of his chest.

When the time comes to pack to go to Chicago, Patrick isn’t surprised when Jonny’s suitcase stays in his closet.

“Pat, I…”

“Don’t.” Patrick snaps, sharp and angry and pleading. “Don’t do this.”

“Us pretending like nothing’s changed is only making things worse.” Jonny shakes his head, and Patrick twists his hands in the hem of his shirt. “I don’t want…”

“You don’t want me?” Patrick finishes for him, and Jonny’s pained gasp is so loud that Patrick can hear it from across the room.

“No – Pat, no.” Jonny looks like he wants to move closer, to grab Patrick, but Patrick’s sure if he does that he’ll fall apart. “I just…me not playing, it wasn’t my choice, you know? And I don’t want…I don’t want to resent you for playing. I can’t…Patrick, I can’t go back to Chicago and not be able to play.”

“Okay, so,” Patrick starts, rubs his palm over his face and tries to slow his racing heart. “So, stay here, that’s okay Jonny. I can come back when I can, and we can-“

“No,” Jonny interrupts. “I don’t…I don’t want that.”

“You want to break up.” It isn’t a question, and Patrick feels something awful and dark take root in his chest. “You’re breaking up with me.”

“I’m sorry.” Jonny says, pathetically, and Patrick’s answering laugh is harsh.

“We’ve been together for five fucking years, and you want to break up because…because your pride is hurt because I can still play and you can’t?”

“Pat…”

“Fuck you.” Patrick answers, grabs what he can reach and zips his suitcase closed. “Fuck you, Jonathan.”

The anger lasts through the flight and the uber ride, up the elevator, until he’s stepping through the door of their condo. It melts out of him as he collapses on the couch they argued over purchasing, everything warm and familiar and it’s all so Jonny that Patrick feels like this heart is being ripped out of his chest. He cries, clutching the ugly throw pillow Jonny had bought as a joke, like he’s in some goddamned romantic drama. Cries out his hurt and disappointment and missing Jonny already like a phantom limb. He cries until he’s exhausted and then drags himself down the hall, slipping past the door to the master bedroom and going face first into the mattress in the guest bedroom.

It takes him three days to finally sleep in his own bed.

“This is fucking stupid.”

It says something about how bone-tired Patrick is that he didn’t even notice the front door opening, too lost in a middling season and an aching wrist and a broken heart. He turns, and Jonny’s standing in their doorway, bag in hand and looking just about as worn out as Patrick feels.

“Jonny?”

“This is fucking stupid, I’m fucking stupid.” He tells Patrick, stepping further into a space he hasn’t been in for two months. “I’m so sorry, Pat. I was…I don’t know, I was angry and sad, and instead of talking to you I pushed you away and…yeah. I’m fucked up about hockey being over, but I want to be here. I want to be here, with you, even if you play another ten seasons without me.”

Patrick wants to lash out, wants to throw his anger and hurt in Jonny’s face after leaving him alone for months, but…it’s Jonny, and he gets it, and they may have several hard fucking discussions coming their way, but now…now Patrick can’t help but be thankful that Jonny’s back. So, instead, he turns back to the television and slings his arm over the back of the couch, hoping Jonny will take it for the invitation that it is.
