US singer-songwriter and former fisheries biologist, Anna Coogan, is excited to announce her return to the UK this October, following the release of her well received new record ‘The Lonely Cry of Space & Time’ in April. The live dates include a show at London’s Sound Lounge on Thursday October 19th.  

The album, a virtual two-person effort which features Willie B (Brian Wilson) on drums and Moog bass, combines Coogan’s three-octave soprano vocals, electric guitar soundscapes and pointed social commentary into a fierce cohesive piece which combines the personal and the political, in a musical hybrid of rock, country, pop and classical opera into a unique whole. Her new direction was born from her series of performances in her adopted hometown of Ithaca, NY, in which Anna and Willie B created live musical accompaniments for vintage silent films.  

Influenced by her classical opera training and her father’s protest albums by Phil Ochs and Bob Dylan, The Lonely Cry Of Space &Time is a stylistic breakthrough for Anna. Call it operatic rock, a genre previously explored by the likes of Kate Bush, Jane Siberry, LeneLovich, Yoko Ono and Freddie Mercury, among others; there have been many attempts at rock opera in the past, but The Lonely Cry of Space & Time is something different.  

A distinct stylistic change from her previous solo work (The Nocturnal Among Us, 2010; The Wasted Ocean, 2012; and Birth of the Stars, 2014); Coogan explains her shift from the acoustic Americana of her past to the jangly, electronic buzz of the new album could be described as her “Judas moment.”   As a guitarist, think of her rubbery, pneumatic, wah-wah sound like a combination of PJ Harvey, Courtney Barnett and her personal favourites, Bill Frisell and Marc Ribot.

A true independent, Anna releases her own albums and books her own tours, which have taken her all over the world, including international festivals like the Blue Ball in Lucerne, Switzerland, Maverick in Suffolk, UK, as well as the Glasgow Americana Festival and Celtic Connections in Scotland.  She has also played extensively in Germany and the Netherlands, and toured as a member of the Johnny Dowd Band.

Anna Coogan-The Lonely Cry Of Space & Time

Anna Coogan is something of a muscal shapeshifter, a Boston born artist, she studied opera at the prestigious Mozarteum University of Salzburg, before moving to Seattle, where she worked as a fisheries biologist Inspired by both Opera and her father's protest albums by the likes of Phil Ochs and Bob Dylan, Anna released a number of albums with alt. country act North19 before releasing a pair of well-received solo albums (2010's The Nocturnal Among Us and 2012's The Wasted Ocean) followed by a collaborative effort with JD Foster entitled Birth Of The Stars, collecting new influences along the way. Following Birth of The Stars, Coogan along with drummer WIllie B were comissioned to create a number of live musical accompaniments for a series of silent movies and these sessions helped inspire Anna's latest album, The Lonely Cry of Space & Time, a disc that see's Coogan continue to explore new paths, creating an evocative, widescreen hybrid of rock, moody Americana (Coogan also toured Europe as part of Johnny Dowd's live band), pop and of course classical opera, formulating a unique, immersive and thought provoking eleven track affair. In comparison to previous releases, which have been, on the whole more stripped back, acoustic, Americana type affairs, The Lonely Cry Of Space & Time sees Coogan at times plug in and rock out, her guitar fizzles and crackles to create stirring soundscapes, whilst Anna's vocal's range from an impassioned PJ Harvey styled lead to soaring soprano interludes showcasing that startling vocal range in full. But it's not just musically or that incredible lead vocal that makes this disc stand out, Coogan lyrics urge the listener on, from the personal to the political, the poetic prose provokes thought and full immersion. The album's opening title track intoxicates from the get go, inspired by the discovery of gravitational waves by a group of researchers, Coogan explores the scientific reason and rationality of extraterrestrial life, stunning swirls and chimes of electric guitar and Willie B's expressive drums form a spellbinding soundscape, whilst Anna's vocals majestically soar to the heavens above setting the album's mode from the off. From such an inspired opening politics come into focus as Coogan follows up with a passionate plea to the would-be president elect not to be typed or controlled by inflammatory words (the album was written, recorded and inspired by the run-up to US elections), a deep throbbing beat is joined by scintilating strikes of electric guitar whilst Coogan's vocals brood before twisting briefly into a thrilling and unexpected gothic rock middle section. As the album continues more clever turns and influences become apparent, Burn For You is an "apocalyptic lullaby" based on the unrest in the Middle East, it opens as a slowburning slice of Americana noir complete with pattered percussion and cinematic guitar chimes before Coogan releases her jaw dropping, soprano secret weapon taking an already impressive track to a new and unique high, whilst Last Exit is an atmospheric five minute plus instrumental that sees Coogan layer waves of guitar to create a widescreen and evocative musical landscape that would be perfect for those aforementioned silent movie soundtracks. The Lonely Cry Of Space & Time sees Anna continue to change and challenge, Meteor is in essence a pop track, with Coogan soulfully emoting over a bubbling electronic backing speckled with waves of almost new wave guitars, in direct comparison If You Were The Sun is a gothic opera piece, with towering lead vocals over sparse instrumentation that is suddenly given a defiant rock twist as Coogan cranks the guitar for a frenzied finale. Whilst, Wishing Well is a heart-wrenching pro-immigration ballad, Anna's emotion fuelled lead backed by the ever inventive percussion work of Willie B. Anna Coogan will be returning to the Netherlands and Germany this February, with an impressive band consisting of JD Foster (Dwight Yoakum, Patty Griffin, Calexico) and Willie B (Neko Case, Johnny Dowd, Jamie Lidell) on drums, followed by an intimate duo show at London’s Green Note on Feb 19th, 2014.  JD and Anna have co-written a collection of new songs (album currently in production for official release later in 2014) that they will be sharing on this tour.   Born in Boston and raised in rural Vermont, Anna Coogan has been deeply involved with music for as long as she can remember. Originally training to be an opera singer, she studied at Das Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria before turning to songwriting. Now celebrating her tenth year as a performing songwriter, Coogan has released five critically acclaimed full-length records (including her recent release “The Nowhere Rome Sessions” on Holland’s CRS Records) and toured extensively around the US and Europe, including performances at the Blue Balls Festival (CH), Celtic Connections (UK), Glasgow Americana (UK), and the Maverick Festival (UK).   A restless spirit and musical adventurer, JD Foster has never stopped pushing boundaries and bending genres during his four-plus decades in the music business. Born in Indiana and raised in Florida, Foster has played or recorded with Patty Griffin, Dwight Yokum, Lucinda Williams, and Alejandro Escovedo, appeared on the Johnny Carson show, and produced records by Calexico, Laura Cantrell, Richard Buckner, and Marc Ribot, among many others. He has been credited with creating the “Palermo Sound” from his work with Sicilian bands, and has recently recorded and toured with The Slummers, a duo with Green on Red band-mate Dan Stuart.   The unique songwriting and performing partnership of JD Foster and Anna Coogan began in February 2013. Brought together for a last minute show opening for the legendary Taj Mahal in Ithaca, NY, the long-time friends took advantage of the freezing weather and stayed indoors to write. A bright spot in an otherwise dark winter, the pair committed a writing session for each season. In October, 2013, the duo went into Ithaca’s Wilburland studio with drummer Willie B, who’s own illustrious career has included touring and recording with Neko Case, Jamie Lidell, and Johnny Dowd, and recorded the collection of original songs. In February 2014, Coogan, Foster, and Willie B will tour Holland and Germany with a limited edition, handcrafted “prerelease” copy of their new material.
