I was thinking about my whole 'riley and Jake are Anna and Maggie's second chance' thing. Basically the haunted lesbians but better.

And I was wondering.. why do they get to live? What did they change that let them escape the narrative?

And then I figured.

Cycle game. Games about cycles. Hell. The first one is a literal horrorboros. Back where you started, mf.

But he breaks this cycle. Promise.

Both Maggie and Jake are reclusive. Maggie lives on a haunted island with literally no one and that's it. Jake lives in a cabin in the woods with his dog.

Maggie (presumably) dies of grief over the whole. Incident. She also doesn't even try and get out, like, at all. She just tries to fix it, but doesn't really go for the future. Her letters are 'admission I have lied and covered up my faults. This is a terrible idea.'

Jake does try and get over his nature. He wants to make a name for himself, even if it's something small. I think about that bridge comment that's like 'youll be that cool dog guy.'

He hates his job because it's a 'lifetime of staring at failure.' Maggie commits to being that. She commits to staring at her faults dead in the face.

Jake doesn't, but only when Riley comes into his life.

If you ask him to sacrifice himself if you made friends with him, he says something like

'ask me ANY OTHER DAY, AND I WOULD HAVE SAID YES.' the mentality flip is today. Right then. Not in the past. Nuh uh. (And only if you make a friendship w him.)

Maggie dies when Anna is gone. Essentially:

Maggie literally can't survive without Anna.

Jake can't change without Riley's influence.

This fucking game.

Just a couple of additions to the Mermaid AU here

Maggie runs a little maritime museum and used to babysit Clarissa when her parents & sister were otherwise gone/unavailable

Anna is a harp seal selkie, and happily married to Maggie (with some difficulty, she lacked both any legal documents proving she was real and a human and they had a hard time hide the seal bottom half)

Clarissa & Nona are completely in awe when they find out Anna, someone they’ve known almost all of their lives, is a selkie

Maggie & Anna are 110% aware of the local mermaid school and 120% know about Clarissa & Nona’s “secret” of hanging out and talking to Mike, Alex, Jonas, & Ren

They’re also super smug about and Clarissa and Nona are just Tired and want to know if the old ladies really Know or if it just seems like they do because Clarissa and Nona are too worried about people finding out
