How old is Gilbert Blythe?

I know from the 1985 version that he was 2 years older than everyone else, held back in school. What is he in the books? Have they done anything in the show that suggests his age? I wonder about this because lets say he IS 2 years older. Anne is 14, he would be 16. (That makes sense because he went off to go work which I don't think would've happened at 14.) It also means he's got way more hormones raging than Anne. It explains his longing looks. It means that he's going to want a relationship sooner than later. It also means that if they skip ahead in season 3 to Anne being 16, then he will be 18. I repeat, 16 and 18 and "more romance" to come. Think about 18 year old boys you know. Ladies.....use your imagination on that delicious morsel of information. I'm all about it
