The Living Theater and Anne Bogart

“The Living Theater” took Anne Bogarts statement “Art is Violent” to a whole other level. While Bogart meant it more in an approach that the decision making in Art is violent, The Living Theater really meant violent as violent. Both are creating art in “dangerous” ways. Bogart rips away choice in her directing which is scary and challenging mentally. What the The Living Theater does may not look like the theater you picture in your head, but takes the idea of Violent and stretches it physically. They roll on the floor screaming in agony, they shake, they convulse. It may seem useless or just hard to watch at times but these performers are stretching themselves to the fullest that they can. Art is violent in the way that it requires performers to push the limits while performing, to grow, change, understand, etc. Physically straining yourself can have the same effects mentally. It just proves Bogarts point further- “Art is Violent”.

Resistance

Anne Bogart’s “Resistance” begins with a quote by Virginia Woolf in which part of it states, “The act of making theatre is already utopian because art is an act of resistance against circumstances”. Bogart continues to describe how if everything is handed to you, your art might nit be the best it can be because you didn’t work for it. I think this is beautifully explained. You always want your art to be the best it can be and if everything is easily handed to you, you might not make the strides to make it the best. Without struggle there is no need and growth. Bogart also advocates to keep going, struggling is going to happen as an artist and we cannot always make it out on top from the start. Young directors are not going to be giving that opportunity, so as a young director make those opportunities for yourself.

Anne Bogart a director prepares “embarrassment”

Anne Bogart’s “a director prepares” contains seven essays regarding art and theater. After reading number six titled “embarrassment”, several topics mentioned resonated with me as a theater maker. The biggest one I constantly grab onto is “You cannot create results; you can only create the conditions in which something might happen”. Getting too caught up in dictating what to do in a rehearsal room could potentially hurt the outcome. Bogart goes on to explain that it’s not the directors job to say and create the final product but to provide the background, details, insights, environment, etc. to create the final outcome. If the director provides what is the most useful then the outcome the director envisioned will happen naturally without having to tell the room. I believe that this is the most efficient way of getting the most natural responses from actors which nine times out of ten is the best choices when creating work. Which is why I’m always so drawn to this section of this essay.

Theatre Should...

“Actors should explore the dark spaces of contemporary society”

This Anne Bogart quote resonates with me because I think that the dark places in society are ignorance, in the sense that people have been told from their parents and grandparents about how dark places and taboos are what they are, but what that does is create a shallowness to certain issues.

I think that if theatre should explore the dark spaces in society and within human nature, the audience is able to discuss those spaces in their everyday life and therefore remove the taboo or bring awareness to why said issue is a taboo.

I have always had the idea instilled in my head that theatre should be used to educate regardless of the medium. Whether it be applied theatre used in the classroom or theatre on stage, it can be used to educate the public on social issues, emotional issues and physical issues and can be as figurative or literal as it wants to be. Which to me is what makes theatre so special, that artists have a responsibility to the audience to leave them with a new impression of the world we live in.
