BEHIND THE SCENES WITH: Wild Belle
We were so taken by the brother/sister duo that is Wild Belle. As if their music, wonderfully mellow and sultry, wasn't enough, the siblings are also outrageously charming. We met up with Wild Belle on the porch of the Moonshine Cafe. The two musicians sat back in rocking chairs, perched perfectly in the sun. We talked about inspiration and how the two got their start singing in Church at a young age. Far from prim and proper church tunes, Wild Belle's reggae/soul fusion could make the most rigid audiences move their bodies. We also talked SXSW crushes, causing Natalie Bergman to blush as she told us about a certain drummer she had noticed...but don't worry Natalie, your secret is safe with us.

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH: Chet Faker
We had such a great time hanging with Chet Faker on the W Austin's roof deck. The Australian soul singer was nothing short of a gentleman and was probably one of the most down to earth dudes we have ever met. We talked about the idea of "hype" and he admitted to us how much the whole "buzz" thing kind of put him off. He said that he would rather build a solid audience slowly, then be a "buzz band," only to die out quickly. Chet Faker is in it for the long haul. It was a perfect sunny day when we caught Chet Faker's set. Playing on an outdoor stage, Chet Faker had the entire crowd jamming to his amazing cover of "No Diggity." He told us how he recorded that cover in his own bedroom. The vocals are soft and almost hushed, which he admitted was in part because he was trying to record quietly so as to not disturb his roommate. Whatever he did, it worked. No doubt, we are loving Chet Faker.

Last night the Arcade hit up SOB's in the West Village to check out the record release party for South Africa's Spoek Mathambo. The openers, like CHLLNGR, were killing it. Once Spoek graced the stage the audience had no choice but to hit the dance floor hard. Spoek's new album, Father Creeper, is out on Sub Pop. For more on Spoek Mathambo head over here.
BEHIND THE SCENES WITH: FIDLAR
We met up with the boys of FIDLAR in the early afternoon mid SXSW. We were asked to hold the interview at the boys' hotel room. We entered the room slowly, a little apprehensive about what FIDLAR's hotel room would look like after a few days at SXSW. The room was surprisingly in some sort of order, but half the boys were missing. A few minutes later they all strolled in and we were ready to go. Examining the hotel couch with clothes strewn all around it, and a lame print hanging in the background, we looked around the room looking for a more comfortable spot. This was the point when all four boys crawled into bed, clearly the most comfortable piece of furniture in the room. The cameras started rolling and we had a pretty hard time not cracking up to the things that came out of FIDLAR's mouth. Favorite quote of the interview... that their music sounded like "Bukowski Punk." Nuff said.
Later that night we hiked over to the FARRR East Side to the WNYU showcase, where FIDLAR was playing. There were 40's and youngins aplenty. Luckily we made it out alive and well to tell the tale.

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH: Ramona Falls
Our shoot with Ramona Falls could not have been more fun. They showed up with their guitars and asked if they could do an impromptu live performance just for us, obviously, as you could imagine we said YES! Set on the amazing roof deck of the W Hotel, we settled in to listen to the sweet tunes of Ramona Falls. We kept on popping up in the mirror behind the two gentleman. When we stopped to re-shoot, Brent Knopf requested that we kept it the way it was. "I like the idea of you guys just randomly popping up there," he said laughing. So there you go Brent, there we are. Watch the live performance here.
Stay tuned for the full interview to come!
