I know I’m the most ‘Marlowe is a dumb fag’ pilled mf in the universe but it’s really sticking out to me as I read this annotated BS. I think the close read the annotators are following is valid and it’s nice to have the context of what Chandler thought (and they do point out the parts where Marlowe is wrong or screwy). But my long held contention is that Marlowe is a reliable narrator about everything but himself, and while he’s meant to be a paragon of truth (which I’m willing to admit he is 90% of the time) the thing that makes him such a great protag and a stand out from other hard boiled detectives is that despite being Mr Truthiness he’s gritting his teeth and clinging to a grand lie about himself at all times
