The sharks in finding Nemo swear that they won't eat fish "on my honor or may I be chopped up and turned into soup". Do you think the realization that there are creatures (humans) who kill and eat sharks was instrumental in these sharks' realization that it's wrong to eat people? Like, one shark was all "it's so fucked up that the humans eat us" and another shark was like "well that's just life, innit, I mean we eat fish" and the first shark was like "well maybe we shouldn't do that then!"

It annoys me when people hate on the characters in The Incredibles for living in the setting of The Incredibles. "They shouldn't want to be superheroes because superheroes are a bad idea in real life!" Well sure, but *they* don't know that! They've never even been to real life! All of their experience is that sometimes a guy in a mole costume tries to tear up municipal infrastructure with a giant drill and preventing him from doing this with cartoonish yet nonlethal violence works out great for all concerned nine times out of ten! Yes, it isn't a realistic social equilibrium, but that lack of realism doesn't reflect on the characters' morality because why would a realistic social equilibrium even be something they were aiming for?

Anyway regardless of your opinion on policy around citizens' arrests it should be legal to extend your arms several meters in public

Right now most of its grants are on hold and most of its clinics shuttered, because of the State Department freeze on global aid. The freeze was meant to exclude lifesaving aid. It was meant to exclude PEPFAR. But the clinics are still closed, because the government is moving too fast and too carelessly to keep our most crucial global programs functioning. When a group of independent journalists, economists and policy experts got together to estimate the lives saved by PEPFAR - and the lives that will be lost if it stays shut down - we estimated 1 million more people will die every year. What would you do to stop a million people from dying? Would you forward this to five friends? Would you show up at our rally on Friday, March 7th at 12pm at the Foggy Bottom Metro Station in DC? People like to talk about how Harry Potter is oblivious to everything and intellectually incurious, and it's true there is a Lot of stuff he doesn't notice, BUT. He is also capable of noticing, seizing on, and investigating the fuck out of small details when he thinks they're relevant to an Evil Plot. Dude will go on a months-long research binge and/or stakeout if there is any hint of Shenanigans Afoot. He is conserving all of his mental energy and awareness for the next time someone tries to kill him (or anyone else). For ten years it was Dudley, then for seven years it was Voldemort, and after that I don't think he could stop if he tried.

Having fun imagining how this would play out during his time in the Auror office. He keeps putting off his paperwork until the last minute and doesn't notice the posters announcing departmental karaoke night until he walks into the room where it's happening. Two of his coworkers suspect, but cannot prove, that he hasn't realized they're different people. Sometimes he sees an offhanded comment in the newspaper about armadillo farms and disappears on some mumbled excuse and comes back a month later, covered in mud and dragging an unconscious serial killer last seen in Moldova.

(and then after five years of this the Defense professorship opens up again and his friends practically corner him and say, for the love of all that's good and beautiful, let yourself have something nice for once)

If by whiskey

If by women you mean the weaker sex, the irrational sex, the sex driven by emotion and incapable of logical thought, the sex suited to homemaking and childbearing and pointless status competitions, the decorative sex suited to holding still and being pursued, then I am non-binary.

But if by women you mean the people who are almost exactly like men but slightly different in psychology and slightly more different than that in physique, the ones who like fibercrafts and bright colors and beautiful soft things, the slightly more cautious people, the people who might need help moving furniture, the ones who prefer ranged combat to melee, then I am cis.

How am I supposed to go on in the world when every day there are pictures of beautiful plausibly-period outfits without trustworthy information on the date and location they were made and the materials and construction techniques used in them? How am I supposed to bear it?
