CARA FERNHERDT doesn’t know who she is. This has never been a problem, because no one else knows anything about her either. Not until now. A bodyguard-for-hire now contracted to a minor noble with a very major role in the country’s future, she’s thrust into the political ring of a country and threatened with the exposure of secrets she didn’t even know she had.

ALTERA VON SÖNNIGHEIT has been betrothed to the Prince of Kriga. An extremely important but perilous match, she’ll have to navigate her future court that would rather her dead than ruler, all while juggling her responsibilities to her people, herself, and whether or not her new bodyguard is a person worth aligning herself with.

oh my god ;; okay so. like. with estel/cadeyrn, estel is 100% the big spoon. she just is. i mean she’s just the best so ofc she’s the big spoon she’s amazing. i love her. and then with rhys/maris, rhys is just. too tall. so he ends up the big spoon whether he likes it or not, i’m sorry, them’s the breaks but it’s not like he minds.

Thank you! I’ll answer this for Freya from The Dawnbringer, also because I recently changed her appearance a little.

Freya is a broad-shouldered woman, and like her cousin Robin, she has brown eyes, although a darker shade, and dark brown hair. She has inherited her father’s tight waves and light golden-brown skin, but her face is that of her mother’s, with kind, round eyes, a strong jaw and full lips that like to smirk. She’s 173cm/5′8 tall, and has been allowed to practice sword fighting from a young age, which still keeps her body fit today. She feels most comfortable in breeches and tunics and wears her hair undone. Only when she slips into her armour, does she braid her hair so that it doesn’t fall into her face. A scar runs across her right collarbone, of which she doesn’t like to speak.

Freya is comfortable and confident in her skin and has no issue showing it. Even strangers would describe her as an easy-going person. She’s proud, but not arrogant.

Happy (belated) wbw!! A bit of a morbid ask, but how are funerals conducted in your world? Is it a religious or state affair? How does the ceremony differ between social classes? What do people think happen when they die?

Since the world of Apocalypse Kings is really similar to our own, funerals and death are viewed as pretty much the same- except for one.

Cremation is a lot more common in the US, and culturally it’s typical that only kids /young adults and murder victims are ever buried and anybody considered an adult when they died is cremated customarily cremated- which feeds into many company policies on bereavement leave as well.

In this world, cremation is usually the next to last step of laying a loved one to rest- the actual last step is to travel to where they were born and either bury the bio degradable urn or spread the ashes.

Obviously, as with many cultures, there are exceptions to the norm and personal preference or last wishes come into play.

Happy WBW! What will people swear a binding oath by? What do people use as curse words?

it depends on who they are! regular humans, just a contract, a promise, it doesn’t really matter, although a common saying in Brune is ‘until the rooster’s dusk cry, [insert promise]’ bc ya know. roosters are morning birds :/ it’s like ‘when pigs fly’ 

for mages, though, they exchange their magic, it’s like a blood oath, they don’t exchange words, but they have a mutual understanding.

as for curse words? well, fuck, shit, that kind of stuff is there, but things like ‘good heavens’ or ‘fucking hell’ is really rare? bc they don't have that concept, although my mc sometimes references Hell, never Heaven though, Hell is more of a place of dark magic than the land of the dead. when talking about heaven, they actually mean like. the sky. you know? 

they all kinda believe that you are reincarnated, it varies from country to country, kingdom to kingdom, religion to religion, like here!

Happy STS! Have you made a conlang for any of your wips? If so, what process did you use to create it?

I have! The supernaturals of Asylumverse have an ancestral language called prim’n. It has exactly as many vocabulary words in it as I’ve needed to use in text so far :P I basically just let my mind go slack and “listen” for whatever word I need, or, if its a concept related to a word I have, I try to logic it out, and just flat out make up the rest XD

Why phoenixes are afraid of humans

For a short time after the phoenixes’ creation, they coexisted in harmony with humans, mingling openly in society. They were created in humans’ image as their guardians, and the best way to protect them was by becoming their loyal friends.

Unfortunately, they soon learned about humans’ great capacity for violence. After watching humans senselessly kill each other in a war, the phoenixes told themselves it was just one mistake. It would never happen again.

They were wrong. Assassinations, violent uprisings, and general chaos followed in the war’s wake. Horrified, the phoenixes fled to a remote area far from human civilization.

This all happened hundreds of years ago. Thankfully, the situation is changing today!
