You don’t have to be suave. You just have to be kind. Ask if they want to hang out from time to time. If they are a performer, go to their shows. If they are a writer, read their work. If they are an artist of any kind, show that you care and compliment them on their work. It’s all about being a good person because at the end of the day, if they don’t return your feelings, at least you have a friend.
