I’m honestly so confused about how the alternate schedule in Six works. Like, do they have their own dates? How many roles each alternate learns? Do they still have swings if one of the alternates can’t perform?
Hey anon
So Six is a bit confusing in regards to the alternates, and I am in no way a theatre expert so this is all just from what I’ve gathered. Please do feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
Short answers:
1) Yes (except for Collette who is a swing not an alternate)
2) 6 for Collette, Courtney and Vicki, 2 for Shekinah
3) They put Collette on
Long answers:
Vicki, Courtney and Shekinah are the current west end alternates for Six, and the reason they’re called alternates and not understudies/swings is mainly because they have scheduled dates to go on, which they usually release every month on Twitter and instagram. Previously, every alternate (which was then Grace, Vicki and Courtney) would know all six roles, although how familiar they would be with these roles completely depended on whether or not the roles were the alternates first, second or third cover. For example, Vicki’s first covers were Cleves and Boleyn so she would obviously be much more comfortable playing those queens than Aragon or Seymour since they were her third covers. Although Courtney and Vicki were never scheduled for their third covers until very recently (Courtney is going to make her Howard debut Saturday I believe?) Grace basically could do any role at any time, since she was the only swing for the tour cast and therefore was pretty familiar with all the roles. While, the production tried their best to stick to her first covers of Howard and Seymour/Aragon*, but Grace did go on as Cleves a few times despite it being her third cover. Again, the cover system mattered a bit less to Grace as she was more familiar with all the roles having previously been the swing.
*Grace used to be first cover Seymour but switched with Courtney to be first cover Aragon.
Obviously Grace has now left the production and that’s thrown the order of who goes on for what into question. Shekinah is only an alternate for Aragon and Cleves, and does not know the other queens at all. So that must mean that Vicki isn’t first cover for Cleves any more and Courtney isn’t first cover for Aragon.
From what I understand, Collette is not an alternate. She is a swing, just like Grace during the tour run of the show. A swing is trained to go on as any queen and will know each role equally well, again unlike say Vicki who obviously knows Boleyn and Cleves the best since those are her first covers. Collette also doesn’t really have scheduled dates, but rather covers for the main queens if they get sick unexpectedly or goes on if something happens to an alternate who was due to be on that day.
(Also there’s like,,,a bit of a weird by-product of the cover system where Courtney and Vicki are only the alternate queens for certain roles. For example, Vicki was alternate Boleyn but only an swing for say Parr, and Courtney is alternate Seymour but only a swing for Cleves. The rule is, if they’re first cover for a queen then they’re considered the alternate version of that queen, but if it’s a second or third cover then they’re the swing/understudy for that role. Although most people will just call any role Vicki or Courtney do an alternate role to save confusion)
