Delphini peered up at her Mother over the pages of her textbook, equal parts amused and annoyed. It seemed like she had been drinking more than ever recently - was something wrong?
Bellatrix collapsed on the couch as Delphi rose, grabbing the empty cocktail glass next to her Mother and whispering a quick aguamenti before offering it.
"Drink this first, Mum." Luckily Bellatrix took the glass without much of a fight, still patting the spot on the sofa beside her. Delphi reached her hands out to pull her up, sighing. "Come on. You still have on a full corset, not to mention a head full of braids. Let's get you ready for bed."
Her Mother took her hands, opting instead to pull her down onto the sofa. Delphini collapsed on top of her in a tangle of limbs, head smushed against her Mother's shoulder whilst Bellatrix planted laughing kisses in her hair. She rolled her eyes at her Mum's antics, trying to stifle her own laugh at Bella’s drunken playfulness, and acknowledging her own defeat. "You're insane, you know."
Her Mother only squeezed her harder in response, and Delphini couldn't help but wonder, again, what is was that might've made her so upset. She lifted her head, reaching up to plant a firm kiss on her Mother's temple before settling back against her.
If you already answered this, I'm sorry, but how did you feel about Shane and Carl's relationship? Shane seemed so genuine about caring about Carl, and definitely (in some scenes) appeared more of a father figure than Rick. (Also I hate Lori. I can't stand her rewatching TWD for the 3rd time. Oh my GOD)
I have not, so thank you for this! I thoroughly enjoyed Shane and Carl’srelationship. My personal opinion too isthat Shane acted more as a father to Carl than Rick did. Now, some could argue that Rick had a lotgoing on with trying to keep the peace with the Hershel and making sure the groupwas ‘protected’, etc. but Carl was his son. Family should be first and foremost (which wasShane’s point all along) especially after being reunited with him.
Carl also quite obviously looked up to Shane, so it wasn’t even like Shane was trying too hard to be Carl’s father, the complete opposite. The two of them had an easy communication that allowed them to have a nice relationship. Now, you could also chalk it up to normal childhood relations.And what I mean by that is, as a kid whenever your parents told you to dosomething you thought it was the stupidest or most insane thing, but then whenyou had your awesome Uncle or super cool adult family friend tell you the samething, you actually took it to heart – so that could be why Carl seemed to alsolisten to Shane more than his own father, just normal opposition to parentalorders.
However, we clearly see (and what helps lead to Shane’s end)is how much Shane cares for Carl. It’swhy he and Rick get in a fight towards the end of S2, Rick putting the prisonerover his own son’s needs. But also Shanehandles Carl with the perfect balance of discipline and respect which is hardfor some to do, especially with the stakes so high in this new, more dangerousworld (and it makes my heart break because it shows that Shane would have madesuch an incredible father, not only to Judith, but to any other future kids andhe would have continued to be the best mentor for Carl.)
I also love that Shane wasn’t petty with his relationshipwith Carl. When he caught Carl hidingthe gun under his shirt, he could have easily went the route of “I want thiskid to still like me, despite his mother’s problem with me, so I’ll play thesuper cool guy and let it be a fun secret between us”, hell no! Shane did what was right and let his parentsknow, but he also was level-headed about it and stated that if they chose to,he would train Carl in its use. He stilllooked out for Carl despite Lori’s rude behavior towards him and that takes a bigperson in my opinion, because many adults could easily dismiss a young kid infavor of dealing with their own shit – but not Shane.
Shane has been in Carl’s life since his birth. He has witnessed the upbringing and the growthof this boy. And you know that Shaneloved him like his own, like a nephew, like a little brother, all of that. He not only got Lori and Carl out of KingCounty when the ZA hit, but he took it further with helping to look afterCarl. He could have simply let Lori justtake care of that, let her do her mother thing and he just make sure they stayalive, but no. Shane took the time tocheck in with Carl and to teach him things (Both things to help him survive,and things to just have fun for a bit which a kid needs).
The world went to shit and Shane stepped up tenfold. He went from a single guy to a family man ina day – with outside circumstances being the absolute worst anyone couldimagine – and he excelled at it. He knew how to be a supportive partner, afather figure, and a tough leader. Allthe man wanted was to keep his loved ones safe, to make sure that if anyonemade it to the end, it would be those two. How could you fault someone for that? Like he said, the world wasn’t like it was before – new game, new rules. Love is what built him up, and love iswhat ultimately tore him down :(
Another (by Yukito Ayastuji) is like Ringu meets Stephen King's It. It deserves so much more recognition.
