We think of the big adaptations of human civilization:

farming livestock grain storage irrigation and sewers dense cities multi-story dwellings specialized labor

As achievements of human intelligence and technology. But considering ants have all of these same adaptations maybe they are a function of massive cooperative populations, rather than intelligence.

A portrait of a colony.

I have this crazy idea for an art project and it would be a wall of photos, studio portraits of ants. Every single ant in an entire colony. And in there somewhere you'd have the queen. Maybe they could all have little frames too and nameplates? (might be too much)

But just so you could see them all at once.

(To keep it reasonable maybe do a bull ant colony... But leaf cutters could be hilarious. One would need a very large wall.)

I think really doing this would stress out the ants too much, but if I ever think of a way where it makes sense... it'd be very cool

Ant discovers horrors beyond her imagination not far from the nest.

An ant is returned to her colony after crawling all over the enclosures to one of my other ant colonies trying to get in.

"Sister you will not believe what I saw out there." "Oh no what did you see?" "Over on that bookshelf there is an ANT COLONY." "No!" "Yes. And they have a little nest, and I think I smelled a sugar feeder! They just eat all they want!" "Horrible!" "Dig in the sand all day." "How dare!" "I know!" "I bet they attack everyone who comes near." "Monsters." "Unacceptable."
