After traveling through the Lemaire Passage, we arrived at Petermann Island. Lemaire Passage is also known as Kodak Passage, because of all the pictures travelers want to take! It's a narrow passage with high cliffs and glaciers on both sides. When we landed on Petmann Island, we were surrounded by hundreds of penguins. Many of the penguins had just given birth and were still protecting their chicks. The island is very bare, but all the penguin activity made it lively and the red and green cryptoplankton (red and green snow) brightened it! Posted @withrepost • @paulnicklen Being a puma in Patagonia is a pretty good life. @sealegacy is on its way to Antarctica to film on a special mission about climate change and Marine Protected Areas which is being supported by one of our generous supporters. We had one spare day to kill on our way to Antarctica and I reached out to my good friend @ladzinski and asked if it would be possible to see a puma. Minutes later he writes me back and puts in me touch with dedicated tracker, Jorge of @wildcat_expeditions. Jorge tells me and @kyle.roepke to be ready at 3am to arrive into puma territory before first light. I have only seen cougars in Canada twice throughout a lifetime of trying. Well, on this morning we saw five pumas, including this family of four cubs (kittens) and I know we just missed three more. Miraculously we were back at our hotel to make final preparations for Antarctica by 2pm with a terabyte of #8k footage and hundreds of shots. @samkretch whipped up this quick edit. What a way to start 2020 by being surrounded by amazing wildlife and amazing friends.
