Anthony had heard about a program where you sent letters and care packages to soldiers overseas. His father had been in the military, as had his grandfather, and though he hadn't wanted to join like his brother had (due to his asthma and bad knees), he figured it was the least he could do, considering his family's history and association with the armed forces. He'd signed up right away and received a name and address. It had been a week since he had gotten the information, and he had been mulling over what to write since then. While he figured it out, he'd gone out and bought a few things the soldier had asked for in his care package. He knew what it was like wanting things that reminded you of home after sending countless care packages to his father and older brother.
Finally, that Friday night, Anthony sat down at his desk to write the letter he'd been putting off all week.
I actually know your name, but I feel like its too formal to call you by your name since you haven't told me it yet. My name is Anthony Stern and I'm your penpal, if you want me to be. I got your name through this organization on campus that connects students to soldiers. I've also sent you a care package with some of the things you wanted, as well as a few other items I know my brother and father always wanted in theirs.
I don't really know what to say in this besides hello. I hope you're doing alright. I'm here for you to talk to if you want to just have that connection with someone from back home. Though, I don't know if we are from the same place. I'm from Cork, Ireland, born and raised, but I moved to America for University. Both my father and brother fight for the Irish military, but I've lived all over the place.
But enough about me, what about you? I'd like to know more about you if I could- that is, if you are willing to share. What are your favorite foods? Color? Song? What do you want me to send you next? I also want to thank you for fighting for this country to keep us safe and free.
I guess this is enough for now, I don't want to bore you.
Hope to hear from you soon,
As much as Anthony hated the way his letter sounded, he didn't want to try to write it again. The next day he had the letter and package in the mail. He wan't really expecting a response back, but if he got one, he figured this could be fun.
