Ever wonder who made this cup? Leslie Buck was a holocaust survivor who immigrated to New York City after World War II. In the mid 60s he started working at a startup called Sherri Cup. While working there, Leslie noticed that many of the diners in NYC were owned by Greeks. Despite having no training in art or design, he came up with this cup and dubbed it the "Anthora Cup" after the Grecian Amphora based on the side. In his Eastern-European accent "Amphora" sounded like "Anthora" - the name stuck. The cups have had an interesting journey. In the 1990s they were everywhere - they even made appearances on episodes of Law & Order, and in movies like Men in Black. In 1994 about 500 million Anthora Cups were sold. Sherri Cup got bought out by Solo Cup largely due to the success of the Anthora Cups. After the 1990s demand for the cups started to wane. Solo stopped producing them. By 2007, they were an extinct artifact. Then, in 2014, a representative from Dart Container Sales Company (who had bought Solo years earlier) notified that copycats were springing up all over NYC. Not to be outdone, he re-invigorated efforts to produce the original Anthora Cup. In July 2015 that dream became a reality when Dart put them back on the public market. Leslie Buck died in 2010, sadly never getting to see the return of his design that had become an icon of NYC. Still, his legacy lives in the simple inscription on each Anthora Cup: "We Are Happy To Serve You" Enjoy reading this? It barely scratched the surface. I did a whole podcast episode on the background, history, and return of the Anthora Cup.
