When you let your best friend teach you jiu jitsu, there is a roughly 279% chance he’s going to pull his craziest moves on you on the first day. Just to mess with you.

Especially if said friend is named Trevor Khan.

You really should have seen this coming, Leo.

Behind the Scenes

I think I’m getting a little better at inking. For this piece I solidified a tracing of a jiu jitsu video screenshot I found on Pinterest into a sketch, then I inked the final lines, trying to use relatively continuous strokes like this one YouTube channel advised. Then, I duplicated the ink layers—the bottom layer became my coloring layer, and I was able to use the Fill tool to get the base colors down before using a marker to add in some of Trevor and Leo’s other markings.

Inked drawing of Leo King and his best friend, Trevor Khan, sparring in the octagon at Leo’s gym. Despite their facial expressions, they’re having a great time, and they’ll probably toast it later with pints from the local pub.

I used the photo as a reference by tracing the figures to capture the general poses, tweaked the proportions a bit to suit the characters, then filled in the details. I decided to ink this instead of sticking with the sketch, and I think I’m starting to balance cleaner lines with a sense of movement and energy. The little 💥thing was inspired by feedback from @temiree on an older drawing, who advised that features like that could liven up a scene. I think in this case, it does add something to the story in the picture, which is generally how I think of drawings—character features or snapshots of a wider story.

Trevor Khan has been Leo’s best friend since they were cubs. While Leo is the manager of his father’s boxing and MMA gym, Trevor became an English teacher at his old high school, but he never gave up his passion for martial arts—specifically, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu—and continues to train at Eddy’s Boxing and MMA gym, where he moonlights as a jiu jitsu coach.

He is one of the most requested English teachers at his school, and no one has the heart to tell him that it’s not because of his award-winning poetry.

Dranak Scouting
