I apologize in advance to my Dragon Age mutuals.
I have a visceral need to see Veilguard crash and burn in the post BG3 world after all the shit EA has pulled gutting Bioware repeatedly.
Bioware made BG1 & 2. Dragon Age Origins was the series' extremely well received spiritual successor and expected to bring the genre into modern times. EA acquired the studio and forced them to change genres because "CRPG's with walls of text would never survive in today's market".
The following two Dragon Age games had brutal development cycles which resulted in games nowhere near the narrative quality of the first - mostly cause the writers/developers just weren't given the time and resources to focus on it. The fact we still got pretty decent narratives is a testament to what could have been if their work had been EA's priority. Instead, most of those writers were fired.
Along comes BG3, a true modern CRPG very much influenced by DA:Origins and others like it, made by a completely different company. Dead genre. Dead franchise. A relic of the past and completely anathema to EA's business philosophy. And it completely swept the entire industry.
Larian as a studio in particular is extremely critical of the gaming industry's tendency to regularly lay off half their developers, and their CEO has spoken out against it repeatedly, insisting that their success with BG3 was only because they respected the incredible talent of their workforce. In turn, there have been MULTIPLE rounds of layoffs throughout the development of Veilguard.
It's just too karmically perfect.
Anyway I'll make sure to tag any pessimism with anti-DA4 since I know I'm raining on a parade. Feel free to block it (and/or me).
