An alternate term for “cishet”? (nonplus)
From here on out, I’m going to start incorporating a new word for “cishet” in my vocabulary.
Why? Because exclusionists have twisted and misused that word so often that they have begun to ruin it. Cishet is NOT supposed to be treated as a synonym for asexual or aromantic.
As a m-spec trans person I shouldn’t have to feel anxiety whenever I see people criticize cishet people out of the possibility that they actually are talking about people like me just because I also happen to be ace. Other people shouldn’t feel that way either.
Exclus have misused the word “cishet” SO OFTEN that it is now a dogwhistle.
Other people have tried coming up with alternate terms for cishet that are fully inclusive and can’t be appropriated by exclus, but there were flaws.
So, I’ve came up with the term “nonplus” to refer to cishet people.
“Nonplus”, or “non+” is in reference to the LGBT+ acronym. The + in the acronym is meant to represent all the additional letters that have ever been added in addition to the original four, such as the QIAPN, etc.
Exclus tend not to like the + added to the LGBT acronym, because it includes ace and aro people. This leads to a harder chance of success in them appropriating the term.
Nonplus are any person who does not fit into the more inclusive LGBT+/LGBTQIAPN acronyms.
Also, the term “nonplus” already has an established dictionary definition of “Confusion or bafflement to the point where you have nothing to say”, which accurately describes the sentiment LGBT+ people sometimes have for those who aren’t.
Nonplus is pronounced the same way as the existing term (Known-ploo). The word remains unchanged when plural.
To avoid initial confusion, I will start using this term alongside the word cishet, so others can understand what it means. If the term takes off, I may begin using it on it’s own.
For example, cishets/nonplus can reblog, but please don’t add anything :-)
