I loved your tags on that naley reblog about their natural chemistry and wanted to challenge you to name five pairings you think have UNnatural/forced chemistry! Chemistry is so subjective that there are no wrong answers :)

Girl I try not to hate on any ship ever but since it's a challenge imma take it :) you're right, there are no wrong answers but these are gonna be controversial so read at your own risk

1. Harry & Ginny (Harry Potter)

It's obvious. What the fuck was the shoelace? Why did they not give a shit about the main character's main love interest? I love them in the book but the movies failed to give the butterflies!

2. Tessa & Hardin (After)

Just... no. No amount of montages can fix the glaring lack of chemistry. The book made me mad so I already didn’t have a high opinion on them, but their movie scenes had me BORED.

3. JJ and Kiara (Outer Banks)

They do have chemistry, as they're very comfortable and combative with each other... I just don't see the romantic chemistry sorry 😭 they come off as just besties to me. And the way the entirety of S3 "realizing feelings" period was basically miscommunication as romantic tension kind of didn’t help changing my opinion. But I did love some of their romantic scenes in S3 so I guess they can win me over?

4. Frank & Julie (The OC)

Oh dear God. This is my biggest pet peeve about the entire show. They were supposed to be the "true love" choice while Bullit was the "safe choice" but it was like??? Like, sometimes I hate a character and am like "no but they're cute with x" but this time the closer he got to Julie the more I hated him lol, it was literally like negative chemistry. Just a mess.

5. Betty & Jughead (Riverdale)... after Season 1

It kinda hurts me to admit because I loved them in Season 1. That first love energy was immaculate. But then in the later seasons they got so stale and stiff 😭

Maybe the reason that I dislike Jiara is because it feels like Ronan and Blue from the Raven Cycle hooking up and that is prohibited by law afaik.

i like the idea of jj x kie but i would rather have them get new love interest! i would love for kie to get a girlfriend and for jj to have a enemies to lovers storyline haha

Oooooooooh, that seems so interesting. Gosh, I still remember when we were all in s1 wishing for Kiara to be Bi in the next seasons… ugh, our innocent dreams.

But omg, yes enemies to lovers!!!! I would die 😩😩

Also (for everyone that is reading this), pls, don’t feel the need to dislike or have to justify why you enjoy Jiara bc of me. It is your opinion and you do not need to ever apologize or justify anything. I just really like to debate on this topic, but, in any way, don’t think that I’m forcing my way to see this ship as the right way.

hi! so about the jiara subject, I totally agree that they are still missing character development, like they are supposed to be 19 in this season and a bit of slow burn keeps the shows going (like Lorelai and Luke if you have seen Gilmore girls) but I also feel like they are contributing to the social idea that boys and girls can't be friends without catching feelings or making out and I don't like that. idk if what I said makes sense

I feel like this has been a theme on our side of the fandom (let’s say it like this) for a long time - about the ship feeding into the stereotype of boys and girls friendships never working. I hate it and I was expecting that in shows, like the ones we have today, it would stop… but guess not.

I’m totally fine with a girl falling in love with her boy friend, I mean, Best Friends to Lovers has been one of my favorites tropes for a while, and, in general, that trope sells… but does Kiara really need to go for every guy?

my personal opinion is that jiara should be endgame but i feel like that pope/Kiara were needed. idk how to explain it, it makes it more realistic by them exploring their feelings and not finding their one immediately? idk

I want to agree with you, really, I do. But I just can't.

I don't like the idea of Jiara, and especially what they did with Pope and Kie in the second season. If they had dragged and slowed down the story in s2, I would 100% agree with you. But this show decided to throw everything that could make OBX as good as it was in s1 in the bin. Jiara could come into the story as like a later reward like many other shows do. I don't feel like the writers have even explored the characters enough to create the romance... We know each person's backstory, but where is the development for love to even be needed? The good kind at least?

But, yes. I would like to say that Pope and Kiara were needed, but I don't find them to be needed at all. It's like they left the development of their relationship for offscreen (in between s1 and 2). If they hadn't done that and showed us how Pope and Kiara like they did at the end of s1, I would've agreed that they were needed... But they didn't. [I find S1 to be superior, could you guess that? Lol] And I don't like how Pope was discarded to the side bc he's the other person on the ship... Idk, again, it all felt like a big pleasing to that big part of the fandom, and a big 'fuck off' to those that liked things the way they moved in s1.

Unpopular opinion: I HATE riara. Kie is a minor and Rafe is a whole adult. They had zero chemistry, and he tried to kill her 2 times. I feel like people only ship them cause that’s the only female character they can ship him with😭

Hiii. Not sure if it's an unpopular opinion since most of the OBX fandom hates Rafe and loves Jiara, but if it is... it better become popular, like, now.

I don't ship them either, don't get me wrong, but knowing what we know and knowing what we've seen until now, I do believe Rafe and Kiara have more chemistry than Jiara as a whole. Even when, like you said, Rafe has tried to kill her twice.

But what you said is true, the people that ship them do it because she is the only female character that can be shipped with him. I, personally, as a writer for Rafe and a person that will stop watching the show if he dies (or is destroyed as a character), do not, in any way, think that Rafe should be given a girlfriend in the show. Like, at all. The man is a confirmed psychopath and has a lot of things to deal with in his storyline. Romance would destroy the path the writers have built for him in these 2 seasons. At least in my opinion. Rafe isn't a character we're supposed to love or to want to find love, he's that kind of villain. He will die in the show, it is an obvious ending to his character, therefore, with or without Kiara, he shouldn't have a romance.

Again, about the chemistry. When I made that first response (the one I reblogged) I only had one scene in mind, the one from season 1 when Kiara went to get drinks. I've spoken about this scene so many times with my friends (@glodessa = bestie as an example) because Drew and Madison acted fantastically to show how Kie and Rafe already have a past - romantically or not, doesn't matter - and he likes to tease her, while she hates him. Come on, for me that's textbook romance build-up. One teases, and the other tells them to fuck off. So, yeah, I was not looking at the fight scenes that they're in or even s2 as a whole. Only that scene.

Also, I wouldn't agree with Rafe being a "whole adult", he's 19, not 25-30 [I speak as a 19yo]. Kiara is still a minor, of course, but isn't she also about to turn 18? I might be totally wrong here, but I don't think their age gap is severe to the point of Netflix not making it a romance - knowing how they loves to pull romance out of thin air.
