So, having just finished a full Star Wars rewatch, I’m saying it again.

Fuck Disney, and fuck JJ Abrams.

Fuck “oh yes, we know FinnPoe is important to you, so here’s a no homo love interest, and here’s a bickering storyline between them”. Not only did we deserve better, but Zorii and Rose did. Female characters shouldn’t be shoehorned in to stop people shipping the two dudes.

Fuck rewarding one set of fans, while shitting on another set, because no, gay shippers are awful. If neither love story was in the original plan, why do either of them? Sorry to be a child, but it’s not fucking fair. There are thousands of fucking heterosexual “oh I can fix him” bullshit stories, so why couldn’t we have had something different? I always saw Rey as aroace, wouldn’t that rep have been awesome too? (By the way, I saw this at the midnight premiere and the almighty groan that was let out across the audience during that kiss? Yeah, it wasn’t just angry FinnPoe fans who thought it was bullshit.)

Also giving Finn and Poe a substantial amount of screen time together, then having them mad at each other for a lot of it, and having Finn keeping secrets? The disrespect to the characters, even outside the ship is unbelievable.

Fuck “we’ve got our first gay couple in Star Wars in Rise of Skywalker!” being a selling point, only for it to be background characters. The thing is, most of us knew they wouldn’t become canon, but then you dangle that out there and for a split second you gave us hope, and you know you did. What did it accomplish? This can also be seen in gay Joe Russo in Endgame. I’m tired of seeing them giving gay fans hope to get publicity, because it just proves you don’t give a shit about us. You want attention and rage bait, you don’t want to let us exist.

This is mostly just a ramble because I just cannot get over the disrespect and how fucking bitter the taste in my mouth is, after what had been up til this film, a fun a if uneven - revisit.

❤️: Which character do you think is the most egregiously mischaracterized by the fandom?

this is a tough one because there's so many lol. Barriss (not a villain), Han (not a player), literally SO many of the Jedi, the list goes on. but I think Luke is one of the most interesting cases because I feel he's mischaracterized in different ways by different sides of the fandom. there's the dudebros who think he's just badass, which he is, but nothing else. his most important character trait is quite literally his compassion because it drives the plot of the whole OT. he's a kind and empathetic person, not some embodiment of toxic masculinity bullshit. on the other hand, there's the poor little meow meowfication and infantilization of him from another side of the fandom. yes he's a ray of sunshine but that doesn't mean he can't be tough too!!! he's nice but he also has zero tolerance for bullshit, is headstrong and stubborn, and the furthest thing from shy. many people (myself included) headcanon him as gay or bi and that characterization of him also enforces really harmful stereotypes and narratives about queer men. so in summary, a lot of the fandom mischaracterizes him through a lens of either toxic masculinity or harmful stereotypes. not fun. that got way longer than it was supposed to be, whoops 🙃

🧡: What is a popular (serious) theory you disagree with?

in-universe: that Padmé was somehow manipulated into loving Anakin, whether by Anakin subconsciously using the Force, or by Palpatine, or whatever. nope, my girl Padmé just has horrendous taste in men (case in point: my least favorite SW character, Clovis 🤢). she saw the red flags and decided red was her favorite color. stay delusional queen. out-of-universe: DISNEY LUCASFILM IS NOT GOING TO RETCON THE SEQUELS FFS. that is the dumbest shit I've ever heard sorry not sorry. Disney admitting they made something not good??? not possible. I can't believe people still honestly believe this. the sequels are not my faves either but with the amount of money made off them anyway, a retcon is not happening

do we consider Reylo popular??? it's very divisive so idk if it counts. but I hate it lol, it's the yucky toxic BookTok type of enemies to lovers. bro deadass tortured her. me personally, I wouldn't let that slide. they also feel like Force cousins or something in a weird roundabout way...? we've already had one incestuous kiss in SW, don't need another. also Rey is lesbian imo. if we're not counting Reylo as popular, I quite dislike Sabezra just because I see them very much as siblings. honestly, any ship where I see the characters as siblings feels icky to me -- Anisoka, Rexsoka, Obikin, etc (although siblings vibes is not my only complaint with those examples, unlike Sabezra).

quite honestly I think this is the hardest one for me because I headcanon so many characters as queer HAHA. my personal philosophy for fictional characters is bi until proven otherwise lol. maybe Ben Solo/Kylo? idk how much he's HCed as queer but I think he and Hux are shipped fairly often and I just don't see it lol. that's a straight man, I'm afraid. but he's really the only one I can think of off the top of my head, though I'm sure there are more

adam driver's interview about the kylo ren arc being a commentary on starting conflicted then choosing over and over to get compoundingly worse until you are a twisted, evil thing-

is directly reflective of my continuing cry that "if you were setting up a redemption arc you should not have had his like first or second onscreen act be ordering the slaughter of an entire village on jakku"

the commission of a fucking war crime should have signaled to everyone that this was not the romantic byronic hero/antihero of a redemption plot. i've ALWAYS said if you were going for a 'bendemption' then that critical as fuck moment HAD to be eliminated. if anakin killed the younglings before his greek tragic flaw corruption arc reached its zenith then the arc doesn't make linear sense. accordingly, if the corruption arc was intended for kylo i also would have saved the war crime until maybe end of the 8th episode to conclude it with a definitive setup that kylo chose ultimate and irredeemable evil, then he could be the big bad of the 9th episode.

let's all learn about the basic parts of a plot, disney:

"rising action" here should be escalatingly worse actions for a corruption arc, or if we don't start with war crimes, escalatingly redeeming actions for a redemption. but define your starting and ending points VERY clearly so the behavior falls within a range that makes sense for the intended arc.

once every six months i go into the anti r*ylo tag to see some of the shit still going on and i just read through all the replies on your post about whitewashing that miguel character (idk the fandom) and omg... the sheer r*ylo of it all. they always all sound the same and it's always COMPLETELY unhinged and offensive to every possible minority. truly stunned rn. anyway have a good one!
